GOP eyes booting Democrats from seats if House flips

Multiple House Democrats who are frequent top targets of the far right face the prospect of losing their committee assignments if Republicans win back the chamber next year.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has threatened to retaliate after Democrats stripped GOP Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.) and Paul Gosar (Ariz.) of committee seats this Congress, warning that some liberal lawmakers “will need the approval of a majority to keep those positions in the future.”

None of the Democrats singled out by McCarthy as examples of who could be removed from House committees have embraced conspiracy theories or promoted violence against their political opponents the way Greene and Gosar have.


But that’s not stopping Republicans from warning of a scorched-earth environment if they win back the House, as many poll watchers expect.

McCarthy has also pledged to restore Gosar's and Greene’s committee assignments.

Democrats maintain that they’ve only adhered to a precedent of taking punitive action against lawmakers who promoted political violence in the absence of a formal rebuke from GOP leaders.

Agreed.  Maxine Waters, Omar, Tlaib, all should be removed from committee assignments.

If McCarthy does what Trump did - go from "lock her up" to not wanting to "hurt the Clintons" - the R party will lose what little tenuous, fading credibility it still retains.

McCarthy doesn't have the testicles to pull the trigger.  He has to be replaced if we are to get any headway.

Again RINO McCarthy needs to STFU! It's not smart to give the game plan to the opponent. McCarthy shouldn't be speaker when the GOP takes back the house.

They should but they won't, unless they dump McCarthy and replace him with someone that has a pair. If they don't put someone really strong in we will see the same old bullshiite that we have seen for over two decades, democrats whine that the republicans have to share power..........and they will to the detriment of the nation. Also a McCarthy type will be afraid to remove any the four communists from position because they would be called a racist and bigot. Sorry I have heard this song before and it always ends on a down beat, beating we the people down.

By "scorched-earth", they mean Republicans treating Democrats the same way Democrats have treated them.
