Pennsylvania Senate Candidate Sean Parnell Loses Custody of Children amid Ongoing Divorce Proceedings

The estranged wife of Republican Senate candidate Sean Parnell was granted sole legal custody of their three children in a court ruling in Butler County, Pennsylvania, on Monday.

Laurie Snell, who shared custody of the three kids, ages 8, 11, and 12, with Parnell, had accused Parnell of abusive behavior and claimed his work schedule was not conducive to meeting his current custody obligations in a case presented earlier this month.

Jude James Arner awarded Snell sole legal custody and primary physical custody of the children and gave Parnell partial physical custody, according to public court records.

The ruling comes after a string of heated court hearings in which Snell accused Parnell of once striking one of their children on the back and once punching a door that hit another of their children in the head. Snell also accused Parnell of choking her until she had to bite him for him to stop.

Parnell denied all accusations of physical abuse, and his current partner and their children’s longtime nanny both reinforced his denial in their own testimonies in which they praised Parnell’s parenting abilities and rejected any notion that he had or would physically harm his kids.

The ruling is a blow to Parnell’s campaign after the Republican saw momentum coming off of a competitive first-time bid for office against Rep. Conor Lamb (D-PA) in 2020 and picking up a coveted endorsement for his Senate race from former President Donald Trump in September. Parnell’s Republican opponents latched on to the messy divorce proceedings, and specifically to two “protection from abuse” orders his wife filed in 2017 and 2018 that were both dropped and later expunged, as a means to attack the candidate as “unelectable.”

Parnell’s campaign has not commented publicly on the ruling at the time of this writing.

I believe Parnell, not the ex-wife.  He is a republican.  I say she got paid to ruin his campaign.  And revenge.  All the courts are doing, is harming the children.  Esp. male child.  I expect, the next thing I will hear is her, making trannies out of the kids.

So, his work schedule kept him from seeing the kids more...so let's TAKE AWAY HIS RIGHT TO SEE THEM MORE!  That is logic. Not.

...The Keystone State’s open seat is seen as crucial for Republicans to win a Senate majority next year, leading some Republicans to question why they should choose a candidate with Parnell’s baggage in a purple state.  ...

 Parnell’s exit leaves a wide-open race for the GOP nomination. Some current candidates include businessman Jeff Bartos and political commentator Kathy Barnette. However, others may now choose to enter, including television personality Dr. Mehmet Oz, who was already moving to enter the race as a Republican.

Democratic candidates in the race include Lamb and Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman.

Pennsylvania Senate Candidate Sean Parnell Suspends Campaign After Custody Loss: ‘I’m Devastated by’ Court Decision

Pennsylvania Republican Sean Parnell announced he is suspending his Senate campaign after his estranged wife was granted legal custody of their children in a court ruling on Monday morning.

Parnell said in a statement that he is “devastated” by the court decision, which gives Laurie Snell sole legal custody and primary physical custody of their three children, ages 8, 11, and 12, and leaves Parnell with partial physical custody, according to public court records.

“I strongly disagree with the ruling today and I’m devastated by the decision. I plan on asking the court to reconsider this decision,” Parnell wrote, suggesting he intends to file an appeal.

Judge James Arner oversaw the custody hearings, which took place earlier this month in Butler County, Pennsylvania, as part of bitter divorce proceedings that have been ongoing for years but became highly public amid Parnell’s bid for office. In her quest for full custody, Snell charged that Parnell demonstrated abusive behavior toward her and their children and that his work schedule was not conducive to fulfilling his current custody duties, which were, at the time, shared between the two parents.

Parnell stated:

In the order, two of the leading factors that weighed heavily in the judge’s decision revolved around me being a leading senate candidate. There is nothing more important to me than my children, and while I plan to ask the court to reconsider, I can’t continue with a Senate campaign. My focus right now is 100% on my children, and I want them to know I do not have any other priorities and will never stop fighting for them.
