Fruitcakes are a joke, unless you do them right, which involves copious amounts of (take your pick) brandy, rum or whiskey, in which case they are simply glorious!

Whiskey sure makes pound and bundt cakes fantastic as well.

I have never had anything unconventional for thanksgiving. True to form, all the way along, entirely predictable, and enormously delicious.

The list is missing cranberry sauce/relish.  I like both the canned version we had growing up in the '60's and homemade versions cooked from fresh cranberries with candied orange peel (or better still kumquats, if you can find them).

In addition to all the normal stuff, we added french bread with a thick slab of butter and caviar spread across the top.  Truly yum!!!

Now I know that people think fruitcakes are a joke, but to consider pecan pies as a joke too is going too far. I take it you've never even tasted a fresh out of the oven homemade pecan pie. Or even a chocolate pecan pie. And if you've ever eaten just a slice of my Mom's fruitcake, you wouldn't joke about fruitcakes either.

   I just think pecan pie is sickeningly sweet.

I'd never heard of pecan pie as a TG dessert offering. I agree - too sweet.
We always went with pumpkin, apple or mince pie, but mostly pumpkin. I made a pumpkin cheesecake one year, which was good, but just not the same.

Heck, any pie on Turkey day is wonderful! I don't make pies too often, and TG is a good excuse to make a couple.

Yeah, I'm not anti-fruitcake. Depends on the density of the nuts and fruit, I guess. My mother used to make mini-fruitcakes the same size as mini-muffins. They weren't bad. Even non-fruitcake lovers could handle a bite-sized one.

I love all the traditional Thanksgiving menu items, but my favorite thing is the "food for the soul" .... time spent with family.  That's the most precious thing.

All of the above with the addition of Lemon custard.  And for a salad...my grandmother's pineapple salad, that contains pineapple, whipped cream, jello and diced pecans, covered in grated cheese.

Oh my, @Right_in_Virginia! although I am a cheesecake "purist" I will occasionally have cherry topped...but this sounds delicious! Wish I had the recipe.

YEP. Mama's cherry cheesecake is a fixture, and the highlight of every family get-together... The last thing laid out, and the first thing gone.

We have something like that... Pineapple, green jello, walnuts, cream, and cream cheese all worried together...

And don't fault me on the walnuts... Pecans are a long way away, and cost a bit up in here.
