Jan. 6 panel demands Meadows testify Friday or risk contempt charge
By Lexi Lonas and Rebecca Beitsch - 11/11/21 08:59 PM EST

The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot is demanding former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows testify before the panel on Friday or risk potential contempt charges.

The committee subpoenaed Meadows and other former Trump administration officials in September for documents and testimony.

The letter indicates a remarkable turnaround from just days ago, when Meadows was said to still be “engaging” with the committee.

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), chairman of the panel, said in a letter to Meadows's attorney on Thursday that "there is no valid legal basis for Mr. Meadows’s continued resistance to the Select Committee’s subpoena."

"As such, the Select Committee expects Mr. Meadows to produce all responsive documents and appear for deposition testimony tomorrow, November 12, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. If there are specific questions during that deposition that you believe raise legitimate privilege issues, Mr. Meadows should state them at that time on the record for the Select Committee’s consideration and possible judicial review," Thompson said.

Does this illegally constituted committee of Pelosi's even have the authority to declare anyone in contempt?

Meadows defies Jan. 6 committee, risking contempt charges
By Rebecca Beitsch - 11/12/21 11:46 AM EST

Former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows has failed to show up for a Friday deposition with the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, according to multiple reports, despite a threat from the panel it would seek to hold him in contempt for any defiance.

Meadows was not seen entering the Capitol and his attorneys had indicated he would not appear. The committee did not immediately respond to request for comment from The Hill.

The move tees the committee up to pursue yet another full House vote to censure a witness for failing to appear before the panel’s investigators, kicking to the Department of Justice the decision of whether to pursue criminal charges.

The threat from the committee comes as it has been engaging with Meadows since September about a deposition originally scheduled for Oct. 15.

But when the White House on Thursday cleared the National Archives to release Meadows’s documents to the committee, the panel indicated its patience was up, sending a letter demanding he appear at 10 a.m. Friday.
