US, Taliban to meet for first time since American troop withdrawal: Report

US and Taliban officials will meet face-to-face this weekend in Qatar for the first time since the last American military forces left Afghanistan at the end of August, reports said Friday.

The Saturday and Sunday talks in the Qatari capital of Doha will focus on ensuring the removal of all American citizens, green-card holders and Afghan allies who have applied for or hold special visas allowing them into the US, Reuters reported.

Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen, who is based in Doha, told The Associated Press the meetings will also involve discussion of the 2020 agreement between the Islamic fundamentalist and Washington that paved the way for the final US withdrawal.

“Yes there is a meeting . . . about bilateral relations and implementation of the Doha agreement,” said Shaheen. “It covers various topics.”

White House to hold "official talks" with Taliban

There are some meetings taking place this weekend that seem destined to produce some awkward situations, even if they don’t result in much substantive progress.

 The U.S. State Department is set to hold talks with representatives of the Taliban, which seems a bit odd when you consider that we were just running drone strikes on their capital a few weeks ago. (I still haven’t gotten used to saying “their capital” when talking about the Taliban, but I suppose that’s just the way of the world now.)

 The two main items on the agenda are how the Taliban can contain extremist, terrorist groups in Afghanistan and ways to more easily extract foreign citizens from the country. What the Taliban gets out of this deal remains unknown. (Associated Press)  ...

The Taliban said on Saturday they will not work with the U.S. to contain extremism in Afghanistan.

Taliban political spokesman Suhail Shaheen told The Associated Press the Taliban will independently deal with extremist groups such as the Islamic State (IS) group.

“We are able to tackle Daesh independently,” Shaheen said, using an Arabic acronym for the group.

The position comes ahead of talks between senior Taliban officials and U.S. officials in Doha, Qatar.

This is the first direct talks the two groups will have since the U.S. evacuated Afghanistan in August, with the U.S. saying these talks are not a sign the Taliban will be recognized by the U.S, according to the AP.  ...
