Congress facing shutdown, debt crisis with no plan B
By Jordain Carney - 09/23/21 06:00 AM EDT

Congress is charging toward a government shutdown and debt default and appears to have no backup plan roughly a week before federal agencies would have to shutter their doors.

The Senate will vote as soon as Monday on a House-passed bill that would fund the government into early December and suspend the debt ceiling through 2022. But Republicans will block that bill from getting the 10 votes needed to break a filibuster because of the debt ceiling hike, and GOP senators stress that they aren’t bluffing.

What comes next? Lawmakers aren’t totally sure.

“I don’t know what the plan B is. ... Plan B is to have Republicans step up and be responsible,” said Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), member of party leadership.

Asked about the next step, Sen. John Thune (S.D.), the No. 2 Senate Republican, told The Hill, “I assume Democrats go to the drawing board.”

Plan B is a shutdown.

IF that happens it will be interesting to see one from this side of the fence.

I keep hearing the narrative on who to blame if the debt ceiling is not raised.  The narrative should be who gets credit if the debt ceiling is not raised.

I vote for Plan B.  If the Republicans could grow a pair for just two weeks, the American public would begin to learn how unnecessary all that government spending really is.  The sun would still come out tomorrow.  They would still have their jobs.  Stores would still be open.  Trees and grass in parks would still be alive.  Monuments would still stand.  And if anything, prices would be lower without government competing for the same goods we buy.

A month of shutdown would be glorious.  Imagine government being forced to live within its means.  Government having to prioritize each week what gets covered and what does not from the limited amount of revenue making its way into the Treasury.  It is these times where my hope in limited government begins to arise - only seeing it cut down each time by idiot Republicans eager to cede their power over to the Dark Side.

We must do away with these omnibus bills, there is to much junk hidden in them and no accountability and prone to these 11th hour shenanigans in congress.  Go back to funding bills by agency..

The cat driving is the Democrat.  The person in the passenger seat who got out at the gas station to fill the tank and then made sure the cat was able to turn the ignition with his paw is the Republican.

John Kasich gave us the last two balanced budgets - no balanced budgets since he left office.

Uh, no.  John Kasich was five years old the last time we had a balanced budget.

Current debt ceiling is $28.5 trillion.  Our current debt is $28.8 trillion.  Yet government continues to run.  Our legislators are still able to cash their paychecks as they scramble to add another $3.5 trillion in spending atop the current $300 billion excess over their own self-imposed debt limit.

To put our debt in perspective, our current GDP is roughly $22 trillion.  Our current debt exceeds the entire annual gross domestic product of every American income generator by 30%.  I can't recall a single instance in world history where a nation was able to overcome a Debt:GDP ratio over 1.  Ours is 1.3.

SHUT IT DOWN !!!   NOW !!!
