Mazie Hirono Calls for Supreme Court Term Limits

Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) said Monday on MSNBC’s “Hallie Jackson Reports” that she supported term limits for Supreme Court justices.

Discussing the House and Senate Judiciary committees holding hearings on the Supreme Court’s shadow docket, Hirono said, “A lot of people don’t know what the shadow docket is. I think we’ll be hearing from scholars as to the abuse of the shadow docket by this Supreme Court because they’ve used the shadow docket to do the thing they just did, basically to overturn Roe v. Wade, 28 times in the Trump years and only four during the entire times of Bush and Obama. So there is in my view the abuse of power of the shadow docket and what’s going to happen probably is more calls for court reform.”

She continued, “We’re going to do everything we can to codify Roe v. Wade at the federal level but also at the state level because it’s the state legislators that are very busy, passing hundreds and hundreds of abortion limiting laws across the country and that is why people need to vote. They need to have legislators who are going to impose these kinds of draconian laws on women across the country, creating chaos, fear, chilling effect. We see what’s happening in Texas already.”

Hirono added, “Why should anyone have lifetime appointments to any job? Therefore as part of the hearing on the shadow docket, I think there will be calls for term limits on the Supreme Court. I would support that kind of debate and discussion. We need court reform. It could term limits by increasing the number of justices on the court. It definitely means applying ethical standards.”

Jackson asked, “You said you would support the debate and discussion on that. Would you support term limits itself?”

Hirono said, “Pretty much I would because, as I say, who gets a lifetime appointment or job security for anything? Why should the court be exempted? That’s been my view for a while. We should have a debate on it.”

This is so overly political it's laughable. If the Dems had 6-3 majority they'd be denouncing attempts to establish term limits.

You know, it was once upon a time, and really not all that long ago, that I thought Shelia Jackson Lee and ‘Mad Maxine’ Waters had to be the dumbest things on two legs ever to be elected to the U.S. Congress.  But then I suppose it had to be only a matter of time before even they would be shown to be mere runners-up, or second stringers of a sort, and that someone would come along to surpass even these imbeciles, and in rather spectacular fashion.  And of course it is ‘Crazy Mazie’ Hirono from the great state of Hawaii who did just that, and who has now come to show to both Jackson and Waters what true stupidity really looks like both up close and personal.

But rather than "term limits" for Supreme Court justices (actually, I think this should apply to ALL federal court judges/justices along with Senators and Congressmen), I [again] propose "age limits" for federal office.

For judges and justices, mandatory retirement at age 74.
For senators and congressmen, they shall no longer be eligible to run for office after having reached 70 years of age.

Put it into a Constitutional amendment, and it cannot be attacked as being unconstitutional for "age discrimination" because it is now a part of the Constitution itself.

Put a clause into the amendment that exempts all sitting congressmen and Senators and judges/justices on the date of enactment (so that none of them will be personally impacted).

Rather than age limits, I think 'term' limits are more appropriate.  I'd like to see Senators and Representatives limited to 3 consecutive terms (basically 6 years) and our SCOTUS justices term limited to 10 years. 

As for the presidency, I'd like to see an age limits set to 75. No person should be able to run for the office of president over the age of 75.  Should they obtain the age of 75 while in office, they should be allowed to finish out their term (unless incompetent) and then they would no longer be eligible to run again.
