Family of Doris Miller at aircraft carrier first cut of steel

Members of Doris Miller's family at the ceremonial first cut of steel for the aircraft carrier Doris Miller, August 25, 2021. Huntington Ingalls Industries

In late August, the US Navy and shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries held a ceremony for the start of construction on the newest Ford-class carrier.

The future USS Doris Miller will be the fourth Ford-class carrier and the second ship to honor Miller, who earned the Navy Cross for his actions at Pearl Harbor.

While not diminishing anything Doris Miller achieved on 12/7/41 the US navy now has thousands and thousands of candidate names for future carriers. Because that many more sailors soldier and marines fired their weapons at attacking Japanese planes that day.
