Condoleezza Rice: U.S. Should Have Stayed in Afghanistan Longer than 20 Years

John Binder 17 Aug 2021

Former Secretary of State and national security adviser Condoleezza Rice says the United States should have stayed in Afghanistan longer than 20 years after former President George W. Bush ordered its invasion by U.S. Armed Forces.

Rice, who served as Bush’s national security adviser from 2001 to 2005 and Secretary of State from 2005 to 2009, writes in a Washington Post op-ed on Tuesday that “a core American presence for training, air support and intelligence” should have remained in Afghanistan to serve “our strategic interests.”

Rice writes:

Quote
Twenty years was not enough to complete a journey from the 7th-century rule of the Taliban and a 30-year civil war to a stable government. Twenty years may also not have been enough to consolidate our gains against terrorism and assure our own safety. We — and they — needed more time.
    …

No — [Afghans] didn’t choose the Taliban. They fought and died alongside us, helping us degrade al-Qaeda. Working with the Afghans and our allies, we gained time to build a counterterrorism presence around the world and a counterterrorism apparatus at home that has kept us safe. In the end, the Afghans couldn’t hold the country without our airpower and our support. It is not surprising that Afghan security forces lost the will to fight, when the Taliban warned that the United States was deserting them and that those who resisted would see their families killed.

I have mixed feelings on this issue; especially right now.  One thing is for certain, China Joe created a major cluster.

She makes a valid point.

Afghanistan was always a losing cause, from day one. We should've gotten out 19.5 years ago.

Having said that, since we were already enmeshed in that hellhole, leaving required some finesse, brains and a lot of credibility. Biden has none of those.

Working with the Afghans and our allies, we gained time to build a counterterrorism presence around the world and a counterterrorism apparatus at home that has kept us safe.

Which is the reason we went into Afghanistan to begin with.  To prevent another 9/11.

This is because the Afghans were never taught to hold the country without our support.  (See:  Counterterrorism)

Herein lies the problem.  These are two totally different goals here.  We proved the first could be done (and which we have just forfeited away).  We never set out to accomplish the second.  So it is disingenuous to even suggest that the Afghans would or could unify to defend a national identity in an ongoing civil war setting.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

I disagree.

I watched all those young men running on the tarmac looking to get on a flight out and couldn't help thinking, "what about their moms, sisters, wives and children?" Why didn't they pick up a gun and fight?

There is plenty of blame to go around starting with the incompetent vile crook in the White House followed by our inept military leadership, but if the Afghani's won't fight for their freedom we should not be involved.

 :amen:

Why not start with maintaining our air power until the winter season.
