As Taliban tighten their grip, Kabul airport only way out

A Taliban offensive is encircling the Afghan capital and there’s increasingly only one way out for those fleeing the war, and only one way in for U.S. troops sent to protect American diplomats still on the ground: Kabul’s international airport

KABUL, Afghanistan -- As a Taliban offensive encircles the Afghan capital, there's increasingly only one way out for those fleeing the war, and only one way in for U.S. troops sent to protect American diplomats still on the ground: Kabul's international airport.

A steady stream of people makes its way first to ticket sale counters set up on the parking lot outside the terminal. They push their luggage, load carts with carpets, television sets and mementos, stuff clothes inside purses to make their weight limit as they slowly inch forward.

The lucky ones, those who managed to get a ticket for a flight out to anywhere, then wait more than three hours to make it inside the terminal, bidding tearful goodbyes to loved ones they are leaving behind.

As the Taliban draw closer, the lines and the panic only grow.

It has only been a failed experiment for 12½ years.  Before that, it exceeded everyone's expectations.

I understand the notion that Afghanistan is all on GWB, but I don't think it's a fair rap even though he broke his promise about "nation building."  Casualties were low when he was running the show, but when O'Bastard took over the project he proved how deadly that can be, as combat deaths shot through the roof.  There was a fatal policy mistake in the 20 years, but it wasn't Bush who made the one leading to this panicked escape.
For unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death — if you’re unvaccinated — for themselves, their families, and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm. Sloe Joe Biteme 12/16
I will NOT comply.

That's my point.  2009 is when everything changed.

Almost certainly worse. Saigon was over ran by Communists,who at least PRETENDED to be civilized.

Muslims don't even pretend. In FACT,they REVEL is being barbarians.

It really is a crying damn shame that after the Korean War and the VN War,the US is STILL trying to fight to a stalemate and compromise government.

I and many,MANY others have been saying over and over for decades that "We must NEVER get involved in fighting any wars we don't intend to win by DEFEATIN THE ENEMY MILITARILY,AND THEN HANGING THE ENEMY LEADERSHIP!"

NO MORE NEGOIATED TRUCES! The enemy rightly sees them as opportunies to recover and rearm. We either fight to win,or we don't fight.

@Right_in_Virginia

Well,IIRC,it wasn't even that. We went into the Muddle East to make Boy Jorge look manly due to an upcoming election and his feminine side having been on public display too long.

And of course,once we were invovled there,no President since has been able to figure out a way to pull out without looking like a loser and gutless punk.

We now have Biden,who doesn't have a freaking clue about how to do anything,stumbling into doing the right thing by pure accident. This will probably be the only time you ever see me making a semi-favorable comment about Slow Joe. Hell,he doesn't even know where a map is or what it does,never mind understand military strategy.

All of this could have been avoided by leaving 2,500 troops in Afghanistan.

@Hoodat

Say WHAT??????

What would these troops be doing,protecting the embassy?

There is only TWO ways this could be avoided.

1: Not putting troops there to start with.

2:Not playing kissy face with the enemy. Not only send in combat troops on search and destroy missions,also send agents into foreign countries where the Princes live or play,and killing them and their supporters wherever we find them,REGARDLESS of who they are or whose toes we step on.

If you are going to go to war,GO TO WAR!
