Democrats gamble on GOP caving in debt ceiling fight

JORDAIN CARNEY - 08/10/21 06:00 AM EDT

Congress is barreling toward a high-stakes showdown over the nation's borrowing limit, with neither party ready to blink.

Congressional leaders will soon need to find a way to pass legislation raising or suspending the debt ceiling, or risk a default that could have catastrophic ramifications for global financial markets.

So far, they appear content to play a game of chicken reminiscent of the 2011 standoff that resulted in the S&P taking the historic step of downgrading the U.S. credit rating.  .  .  .

Not much of a gamble at all.  Even though our debt has climbed by over $6 trillion since Trump vacated office, and in light of the upcoming debt ceiling crisis, Republicans will:

  • Allow the current $1.2 trillion in Democrat pork to pass

  • Raise the debt ceiling

  • Do nothing to stop another $3.5 billion from passing

All of this money will be used to ensure Democrats get re-elected, and Republicans are stupid enough to help them do it.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."

-Ayn Rand-

Counting on the GOP to fold is like betting on a three-legged horse to come in last.

They always cave. It's what they do - pretend to oppose the Democrats, until they don't.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn
