Britain is 'very close' to achieving herd immunity against Covid, according to researchers who believe the end of the third wave is now in sight.

University College London scientists estimate 87 per cent of the country's population has some protection against the coronavirus. The team believes the marker for herd immunity now sits closer to 93 per cent, with the highly-transmissible Delta variant having shifted the goalposts.

But other experts say reaching herd immunity — when enough of the population has some immunity against the virus that it struggles to spread — against Covid is near impossible. ...
