Former U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer was shoved from behind and robbed of her cellphone in Oakland on Monday, a message from her Twitter account said.

Boxer, 80, was assaulted in the Jack London Square neighborhood.


"The assailant pushed her in the back, stole her cell phone and jumped in a waiting car. She is thankful that she was not seriously injured," the message read.

Oakland police said a strong-arm robbery that occurred on Third Street around 1:15 p.m. is under investigation, but police in a statement did not identify the victim.

Boxer, a Democrat, was a U.S. representative for 10 years and then a senator for 24 years, representing California.

Oakland City Council Votes to Defund Police, Stripping More Than $17M from Department Budget

OAKLAND (KPIX) — The Oakland City Council approved a budget early Thursday evening that will strip $17.4 million in funding from the Oakland Police Department and direct the money toward other programs.

The $18 million is over the course of the next two years.

There was some expectation that the council would delay the controversial decision but, by a vote of 7-2, the Oakland City Council approved a plan that will redirect the funds from the police department to the Department of Violence Prevention with the intention of improving public safety.

The move comes as Oakland has seen an alarming spike in street violence and deadly shootings, including the mass shooting during Juneteenth festivities at Lake Merritt this past weekend.

Jack London Square is an upscale bar & restaurants area. Yoshi's combines a Japanese restaurant with a small jazz venue, 2-4 blocks from where Boxer was mugged.

What a shame. Barbara could have taken that deprived man out for lunch or dinner,
loaned him a few grand, and gave him pointers how to get ahead.

And Barbara has a spare room and kitchen. Certainly the man could have gained
his composure and peace of mind living with Ms Barbara. Perhaps the man would
have enjoyed use of Barbara's limo.

What a missed opportunity. Now if Barbara can focus, perhaps the man will call her.
Sad. A missed opportunity. Maybe Barbara could polish his shoes.


So unfortunate that she had to experience the world without her shield. If a social
worker wasn't available to cheer her up.

Motor-boating would cheer her in a flash. It has been quite some time.

Former Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) was assaulted and robbed in Oakland, California, on Monday afternoon, according to a statement posted by her Twitter account and confirmed by local police. No gun was involved in the daylight robbery.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported:

    The Oakland Police Department confirmed that at 1:15 p.m., while a victim was walking in the 300 block of Third Street, they were approached by a suspect, who forcefully “took loss from the victim,” and fled into a waiting vehicle. The incident is currently being investigated, and police declined to release the identity of the victim. The area of the assault is near Jack London Square.
