Director Oliver Stone Slams the Cancel Culture ‘Witch Hunt’ and Twitter for Banning Trump: ‘It’s Shocking!’

Former president Donald Trump has an unlikely ally in his fight against social media censorship — Hollywood director Oliver Stone.

The two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker has lashed out at Twitter over its decision to ban Donald Trump, calling the move “shocking” while also criticizing the country’s growing trend toward censorship, which is being carried out by social media companies.

Oliver Stone was responding to a question about cancel culture during an interview with Britain’s The Independent at the 74th annual Cannes Film Festival.

“Of course I despise it,” the Platoon filmmaker said. “I am sure I’ve been cancelled by some people for all the comments I’ve made…. it’s like a witch hunt. It’s terrible. American censorship in general, because it is a declining, defensive, empire, it [America] has become very sensitive to any criticism.”

He added: “What is going on in the world with YouTube and social media. Twitter is the worst. They’ve banned the ex-President of the United States. It’s shocking!”

When I think of Stone he's more of the peacenik anti-inventionism brand of leftism, conspiratorial-focused. He hasn't really had past with a lot of obnoxious social just crap in his movies has he? Strikes me as a stuck in the 60's sort of liberal. I'll take him as an ally if he stands again wokeness though. People can change IMO.

He's certainly not a contemporary leftist, and its always a pleasant surprise when criticism of the current insanity comes from unexpected quarters.

But Stone is a noted leftist and leftism, as an ideology, must always be 'forging ahead', evolving. The peaceniks were prelude and that should be acknowledged by any lib professing to reject todays wokeness & cancel bullsh*t. I would hope so, anyway.

At age 20, Stone enlisted in the Army and volunteered for duty in Vietnam.  It's been down hill since then.  Funny he would take this stance now after glorifying Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro.  Oh well, maybe some truth is finally creeping into his world outlook.

Ollie is smart enough to know the social media weapons that are being forged today can easily be turned to be wielded against him.  He also knows the odds of that happening are >50%.  And the irony would be the ones doing the wielding are still his buddies today.
