We have a saying in Texas - "One Riot - One Ranger"I have written this before sometime in the past; if you have read it, just skip it.
Husband was Bill Shaw, Republican Chairman of San Jacinto County. This was during time when Bill Clinton was President.
Went to Texas State Republican Convention which was in Houston Convention Center that year. Bill had two artificial hips so we always had a motor wheelchair for him. One day I walked, he rolled, to lunch from the Center and after lunch, walked/rolled back through the park in front of the center. One goes across the street and go in front doors of center. I went ahead of him to go to ladies room and meet him back at our seats. When I came out of ladies room, there was a crowd of people looking out the front doors where something was happening in the park right there across the street.
The front doors were locked. I looked across the street and there was Bill in the middle of a bunch of Black Panthers with black hoods on their face and all had shotguns. There was Bill in his wheelchair with his red cap that said, "Jail to the Chief" (as I said, Clinton was president). He was shaking his finger at those men and who knows what he was saying.??
Right there in front of the center, there were city cops standing there. Found out later, City Mayor told cops not to bother the Black Panthers. The press were there taking pictures. THEN, one Ranger, tan uniform, with his Ranger hat on, not a huge man, walked across the street, told the Black Panthers to get out of Bill's way so he could cross the street, and told them to leave. The Black Panthers gathered their stuff and left.
One Riot - One RangerThis was on all TV city news channels that evening. Bill was their hero. He was everyone's hero in the Republican Party before and after that day.
