Rodents chow down on Teslas, causing thousands in damage
https://nypost.com/2021/07/11/rodents-chow-down-on-teslas-causing-thousands-in-damage/

...“Most auto manufacturers use the soybean vs. oil in their wire insulation for newer vehicles because it is less expensive and better for the environment,” Tesla service adviser Jose Solis wrote in an email to Williams that she shared with The Post. “The use of this material would not be considered a ‘defect’ in design or use … Considering there are too many factors outside of Tesla’s control we cannot cover this under a warranty or repair.”

Solis is right that it’s not just Telsa.

Automakers have been getting slammed for years with complaints of their allegedly rat-friendly soy-based wiring. And like Tesla, they have all refused to cover the damage, claiming that rats chewing on car innards is the result of nature and therefore not their problem....

  • That is the problem with everything. They try and make it better without realizing the old is fine.

Most Auto Insurance should cover it.  I know under certain circumstances we covered rodent/coon damage when they take up residency in cars and destroy an interior.  Most times it was farm vehicles/trucks however.  Coons had a taste for F-150's back then.  Not sure if they have refined their tastes in the subsequent years.

Not only can rodents do tons of damage by feasting on the wiring, but they can also lead to maddeningly difficult-to-diagnose problems if there is a wire way out of sight that was chewed on just enough to allow it to short under damp/wet conditions, or when the wire is shaken a certain amount during operations.

I have an acquaintance who spend thousands trying to get a weird problem in her car fixed, until she finally found a mechanic who was willing to put his money where his work was, and stuck through with it until he had replaced enough wiring in the car that the problem cleared up.  He also went painstakingly through all of the wires he pulled and was finally able to find a wire that had been chewed just enough that it caused a problem when it got damp and the car was operated at certain speeds, which caused a vibration that made the wire touch the metal frame.
