In April, the Navy officially retired the Bonhomme Richard.
The blaze, which began on July 12, 2020 while docked at its home port in San Diego and burned for 4 days, gutted the large deck amphibious warship. The Navy ultimately decided it wasn’t worth the cost and effort to rebuild the 22-year-old Bonhomme Richard, so it officially released the fire-ravaged warship from duty in April 2021. The ship is now destined for a scrapping yard in Texas.
The fire started in the lower decks of the ship reserved for storing Marine vehicles and spread to the stern and bow up through every level of the ship. The fire was so strong that it caused the flight deck to collapse, and it also destroyed the bridge, leaving the ship completely inoperable. The 4-day firefighting effort involved hundreds of seamen and even water drops by Navy helicopters.
