Capitol Police to use Army surveillance system on Americans to ‘identify emerging threat’

The U.S. Capitol Police will begin fielding military surveillance equipment as part of sweeping security upgrades as the police force pivots towards becoming “an intelligence-based protective agency” following the Jan. 6 attack.

Defense Secretary Loyd Austin recently approved the Capitol Police’s request for eight Persistent Surveillance Systems Ground - Medium (PSSG-M) units. The system provides high-definition surveillance video and is enabled with night vision. The system does not include facial recognition capabilities, according to the Pentagon.

“This technology will be integrated with existing USCP camera infrastructure, providing greater high definition surveillance capacity to meet steady-state mission requirements and help identify emerging threats,” the Pentagon said.

Ummmmm, this appears to simply be significantly improved definition plus night capability for an existing security camera network. IOW, a tempest in a teapot.

The liquor store and grocery stores half a mile from me have security cameras, probably several spread around the stores, inside and out. How is it an outrage that the US Capitol has a security camera network?

Further, while this upgrade might have resolution and night capabilities better than what is currently commercially available, those capabilities probably will be commercially available in a couple of years, and common a few years beyond that. How is US Capitol security cameras having excellent resolution and night capabilities an outrage?
