Here comes another 100,000 refugees from Haiti. Ugggh!
Flew there back in 2002. Upon arriving, I looked out the window to see the beautiful aqua color that surrounds islands in the Caribbean, and Haiti was trimmed in brown. No aqua beauty to be seen at all. The air carries a fine dust particulate, that if you ride around with the windows down, your hair is stiff, like it is cement.
The poverty is overwhelming. Extremely noticeable are the people standing around doing nothing. 80% of the country is unemployed. Like dandelions in a yard that has never been sprayed for weeds. Everywhere.
I could not wait to get out of the country. If you go to the airport, they do everything to prevent you from getting to the ticket counter to get a ticket out early. They try to keep you there and fleece every dollar from your pocket. When I finally got near the counter, I told the gate keeper, either I get on the next plane leaving, or I will cause a riot in this airport. Me and the woman standing next to me, who was ill, wanting to go home, are the only folks out of maybe 100-120 people looking to get out of the country early.
I asked the flight attendant once we were in the air how many empty seats were on the plane, she said 78. That is 78 times $200 that American Airlines lost in revenue with one flight.
To say Haiti is a sh*thole would be to defame sh*t.
