The British government has vowed to enact a “much more permissive regime” of coronavirus regulations in which the wearing of masks will become “personal choice”, a government minister has promised.

Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick said that he will personally refrain from wearing masks after the final lifting of lockdown restrictions in England on July 19th, which the government has promised will be “irreversible”.

Interesting. The UK is in the midst of a new cases bump or surge - still less than half the magnitude of the winter holidays time period bump. Maybe the government believes it's peaked, or maybe the government sees that there is no daily deaths bump that follows the new cases surge. Or maybe the government finally realized that their shutdown was utterly ineffective in December and early January.

Yes, restrictions are being released on July 19.  In August they will decide if people need to have a third shot.  Delta and Delta Plus are in the UK. They watch hospital numbers and will react if those numbers get too high.

After all this time, is the UK finally going to follow the science and acknowledge that a cloth mask does absolutely nothing to stop an airborne virus?  One would think that after 18 months, someone would question why there isn't a single piece of scientific data showing that masks provide protection against SARS-2 infection.

From this, https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/ , it appears that the UK's surge may have peaked, less than half the magnitude of their December-January surge. OTOH, the UK has not experienced a surge or bump in daily deaths. From the latter I'd infer some combination of:

* Vaccines (mainly AstraZeneca has been used, last I heard) preventing breakthrough cases from getting serious;

* Treatments getting better;

* The Delta variant causing less severe disease.

Probably all three in varying proportions.
