Fox News television host Tucker Carlson announced during his nightly show on Monday that he has been warned by a whistleblower about plans made by the National Security Agency to intercept his electronic communications and use them as leverage to force “Tucker Carlson Tonight” off the airwaves, in an unethical and unconstitutional breach of power.

“Yesterday we heard from a whistleblower within the U.S. government who reached out to warn us that the NSA, the National Security Agency, is monitoring our electronic communications and is planning to leak them in an attempt to take this show off the air,” Carlson stated.

“Now that’s a shocking claim, and ordinarily we’d be skeptical of it, it is illegal for the NSA to spy on American citizens, it’s a crime. This is not a third-world country, things like that should not happen in America. But unfortunately, they do happen, and in this case, they did happen.”  ...

...  Before accusing the NSA of spying, Carlson followed up on a segment he did nearly two weeks ago suggesting people working with the FBI helped orchestrate the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, a claim that legal experts panned as highly dubious.

Citing language in publicly available indictments, Carlson said the FBI appeared to have "foreknowledge" of the attack on Congress. He said agents he spoke to over the weekend "confirmed that is true."

Carlson quoted one FBI agent as saying, "The FBI had sources in that crowd — confidential sources, snitches. That's 100% certain."  ...

Monday, FNC host Tucker Carlson said the federal government was spying on him and those associated with his program, which Carlson said was revealed through a whistleblower within the government.

According to Carlson, the proof was the whistleblower revealed details of a story they had been working on that could have only been known through texts and emails.

Carlson said his team had filed a Freedom of Information Act request and called on the federal government to cease the behavior immediately.

I laughed when Fox News host Tucker Carlson said a National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower told him that agency was monitoring his emails to leak them in an attempt to take his show off the air. From my 19 years as a CIA analyst and five years with House Intelligence Committee staff, I found this impossible to believe, for three reasons.

First, I believed NSA’s huge and lumbering bureaucracy would never agree to such a flagrant violation of the agency’s foreign intelligence charter to spy on a leading conservative American journalist. Even if most NSA officials and analysts dislike Carlson, I assumed they would view violating NSA rules and the law to monitor him as too risky, since a leak was certain given how extremely controversial such an action would be and the large number of NSA personnel who would know about it.  ...

I therefore dismissed Carlson’s claim that the NSA was reading his emails. Then I saw this extraordinary denial from the NSA:


...    Let’s be very clear about what the NSA said in its statement. It denied “targeting” Carlson, but did not deny reading his emails. The NSA also did not deny that it may have accessed Carlson’s communications through “incidental collection.”

These were huge omissions, since incidental collection is a well-known and controversial way the NSA collects vast amounts of Americans’ communications without warrants. This happens when an innocent American communicates with a legitimate NSA target, such as someone believed to be under the control of or to be collaborating with a hostile foreign power. ...
