The Alfred P. Murrah building had far less damage.  This was complete collapse of entire wings of the building.

Notice how the side with the building still standing, the parking level has collapse downward.  Look at the supporting columns where the level used to be.

Way too early to tell the actual cause of the building collapse in Miami Beach, but first responders on scene feel it was a sinkhole because of the lack of enough surface debris. The building fell into something.
The side of the building away from the beach is still intact.

Just spoke to one of the first responders at the building collapse on Miami Beach/Surfside and initial working theory is a sinkhole.
Having lived down here 17 years I’ve heard more than a few architects and engineers express concern about this exact thing.

OH, that makes sense. Terrible, but some small consolation because it means our construction quality may not have sunk to China levels.

If I were anywhere nearby, I would de-ass the area post-haste. If the sink hole gets larger, more buildings could be impacted.

...Work was being done on the building’s roof, but Burkett said he did not see how that could have been the cause.

Surfside City Commissioner Eliana Salzhauer told Miami television station WPLG that the building’s county-mandated 40-year recertification process was ongoing. Salzhauer said the process was believed to be proceeding without difficulty. A building inspector was on-site Wednesday....

Recertification process may only be inspection and paperwork.  It rarely means taking a 40 year old building already in use and replacing wiring and the like to meet modern construction codes.
