Vice President Harris’ first trip to the border: What you need to know

Vice President Kamala Harris is traveling to El Paso, Texas Friday for her first visit to the U.S.-Mexico border following mounting criticism from Republicans for not going sooner after being tapped by President Biden to oversee the administration’s efforts in tackling "root causes" of the border crisis.

Upon arrivalal in Texas, Harris will participate in a walking tour of the El Paso Central Processing Center, a Customs and Border Patrol facility. Following the tour, Harris is expected to receive an "operational briefing," which is set to cover the operations of the facility, the latest advancements in technology, and the facility’s efforts and the administration’s efforts to combat transnational crime.

Harris departed Joint Base Andrews early Friday and is traveling with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin, and Democratic Rep. Veronica Escobar from Texas.

After the tour, Harris is expected to hold a conversation with advocates from faith-based NGOs, and Shelter and Legal Service Providers. Harris, joined by Mayorkas, Durbin and Escobar, at the end of the trip, are set to make remarks to the press and will likely take questions.

Kamala Harris: My Border Visit ‘Always’ Part of the Plan Since March

Vice President Kamala Harris visited a border patrol facility on Friday, telling reporters she had been planning to do so since March.

“I said back in March I was going to come to the border so this is not a new plan,” she said.

Harris visited the border with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL).

“I’m glad to be here. This was always the plan to come here. And I think we’ll have a good and productive day,” she added

Harris delayed visiting the border until 93 days after Biden appointed her to lead on the crisis.

After taking on the role, Harris consistently resisted the idea of traveling to the border — even laughing off questions about a possible trip.

“Not today,” she replied with a laugh in late March when asked if she would visit the border.

Vice President Kamala Harris was outraged at a reporter on Friday upon her arrival in El Paso, Texas, who asked her why she took so long to visit the U.S. southern border to investigate the ongoing migrant crisis. Harris faces intense criticism over the Biden administration’s handling of the situation, which she was delegated to manage.

Republicans accused Harris of only visiting the location as a “pit stop” en route to her California home and having waited 93 days after President Biden tasked her with managing the crisis.

Upon arrival at an El Paso airport, a journalist asked Harris why she chose now to visit, and said, “Well, it’s not my first trip. I’ve come to the border many times. I said back in March I was going to come to the border so this is not a new plan.”

El Paso, Texas, is the new Ellis Island, Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX) told Vice President Kamala Harris as Harris arrived for her border visit.

“Welcome to El Paso. Welcome to my community, to the new Ellis Island, to the capital of the border,” Escobar said.

Ellis Island was used as a reception center for millions of legal immigrants beginning in 1892. But Congress sharply reduced immigration in 1924 and 1925, and the island facility was closed in 1954 when immigrants compromised only about one in 14 Americans.

In the low-immigration years after World War II, Americans’ living standards, wages, and productivity rose hand-in-hand.

Friday on Fox News Channel’s “America Reports,” Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) called Vice President Kamala Harris’ first trip to the U.S.-Mexico border as vice president a “huge flop.”

Gonzales, whose district borders Mexico, said Harris only spoke with people at the border “for a few hours,” describing her trip as just parachuting in.

“[T]he border is very different throughout,” Gonzales advised. “You know, I represent over 40% of the border and it’s just very diverse. You know, Kamala’s first visit to the border as vice president has been a huge flop. You know, she’s just kind of parachuted in, only listened to folks for only a few hours. That’s not how you listen to folks, and that’s not how you respond to it. What’s happening in El Paso is different than what’s happening the Del Rio sector or in the Big Bend sector or in Laredo or Rio Grande Valley.”

“I’ll give you an example,” he continued. “They’re saying they’re making progress. Well, in Culberson County just very close to El Paso, there was a 35-year-old man traveling with his 15-year-old son from Ecuador. They make the trek. Well, guess what? His 15-year-old son dies because they got separated from a group. He died a horrible death, you know, not having any water. That’s the reality of what’s happening on the ground. Migrants are dying.”

Kamala Harris Claims ‘Extreme Progress’ on the Border as Crisis Grows Worse

Vice President Kamala Harris claimed Friday that she and President Joe Biden had achieved “extreme progress” on the border, despite the growing number of illegal crossings into the United States.

“I call it progress. We’re not exactly where we want to be yet, but we have seen extreme progress over the last few months,” Harris said during a press conference after visiting a border facility in El Paso, Texas on Friday.

When Harris first assumed leadership on the border crisis, the number of migrants detained there had reached a 15-year high, with over 173,000 migrants apprehended.

The problem only got worse.

In April, Border Patrol agents and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers encountered more than 178,000 migrants. In May, CBP encountered 180,034 people trying to enter the border — the most in a single month for the first time in 21 years.

Harris was likely speaking about alleviating the overcrowded conditions of border patrol facilities as an overwhelming number of minor migrants separated from their families were smuggled or dropped off at locations on the Southern border.

For one thing, Harris didn’t even go to the actual border. She visited a Border Patrol station about nine miles from the Rio Grande, talked to some immigration activists and legal service providers, posed for press photos back at the airport, and departed for Los Angeles before 1 p.m. Even the choice of El Paso was pure theatrics. Instead of going to the epicenter of the crisis, on the other end of Texas in the Rio Grande Valley, Harris reportedly chose El Paso because that’s where the Trump administration first implemented its short-lived family separation policy. Politics, not the harsh realities on the border, was her motivation.

None of this comes as a surprise. By now we’ve come to expect cursory and substance-less border theatrics from this administration, along with reckless policy decisions like ending the “Remain in Mexico” program, which probably did more than anything else to stave off the migrant surge that was unleashed when Biden signed the order. ...
