Public health chiefs have said they “expect” the coronavirus vaccines to work against the new Delta-plus variant which has been identified in the UK.

There have been 41 confirmed cases and a further 11 possible incidences of the strain, also known as AY.1, in the UK.

Scientists have expressed concern about the variant, which is closely associated with the strain first identified in India but carries an extra mutation linked to vaccine evasion.

The Indian government raised the alarm over Delta-plus on Wednesday after a rise in cases across the country.

Public Health England has been monitoring AY.1 for several weeks and has put extra measures in place where cases are identified, including enhanced contact tracing, testing and isolation.

Because it is so closely associated with Delta, which is classed as a variant of concern, health protection teams are responding with “high priority” to reports of cases and control measures, PHE said.

The key word here of course is "should".  So ... yet again, they really don't know.

When there is a new variant, scientists cannot immediately know what the variant will do in the real lives of people.  Lab work is done on the variant, then as cases happen, more and more is learned. The article said:

"Scientists have expressed concern about the variant, which is closely associated with the strain first identified in India but carries an extra mutation linked to vaccine evasion."

The article also says there are some cases of Delta Plus in the United States.

I do not think mutations of the virus will ever stop.  Plagues across the world are one sign of the end times.  Carry on, @roamer_1

The Delta variant rising the cases in the UK does not appear to be resulting in a similar rise in deaths.  Previous peaks in cases usually had a 2~3 week lag in peaks in deaths.  4 weeks into this "surge" does not show much increase in deaths.  Perhaps this variant is more infectious but less deadly.

Increases in deaths tend to lag increases in new cases by about two weeks. So at this point the UK is not experiencing an increase in deaths that might be expected from the bump/surge in new cases. The new cases data I'd love to see are the respective percentages of vaccinated vs. not vaccinated.
