Nations That Relied on China's COVID Vaccines Now Seeing Large Increases in Infections

The Chinese Communists had promised the world a safe, effective vaccine to combat the coronavirus pandemic. Before their vaccines had even hit the market, they were selling millions of doses to countries such as Mongolia, Bahrain, and Chile. They loaned a billion dollars to Latin America so countries there could afford the shots. They gave 100,000 doses to tiny, impoverished Bangladesh.

All of this was to build goodwill and improve strained relations that China had damaged so much in recent years. Indonesia — which never counted itself a “friend” of China — was being given vaccine doses when most of the west was still trying to get their own populations vaccinated.

But there was one, small problem with the vaccines. They don’t work very well.

In the Seychelles, Chile, Bahrain and Mongolia, 50 to 68 percent of the populations have been fully inoculated, outpacing the United States, according to Our World in Data, a data tracking project. All four ranked among the top 10 countries with the worst Covid outbreaks as recently as last week, according to data from The New York Times. And all four are mostly using shots made by two Chinese vaccine makers, Sinopharm and Sinovac Biotech.

“If the vaccines are sufficiently good, we should not see this pattern,” said Jin Dongyan, a virologist at the University of Hong Kong. “The Chinese have a responsibility to remedy this.”

As I've posted before, I'd love for the cause of this apparent ineffectiveness to be understood. If it's poor quality control, well, potential customers of Chinese manufactured pharmaceuticals (especially Sinovac and Sinopharm) need to know that. OTOH, if it's due to variants currently in circulation being too different from what was used to develop the vaccines, then this would be a big reason to move on from the traditional inactivated/weakened/dead virus vaccine technology.

But the UK didn't rely on the Sino vaccines... and they're also seeing upticks. Now, granted, they use AstraZeneca, which also has a mediocre track record, but as an industrialized nation, it's unsettling.

The U.S. reliance on mRNA vaccines for the vast majority of vaccinations—and the rejection of the AZ vaccine—appears to have spared them any major increases so far. Our vaccines appear to be better.

But the UK didn't rely on the Sino vaccines... and they're also seeing upticks. Now, granted, they use AstraZeneca, which also has a mediocre track record, but as an industrialized nation, it's unsettling.

The UK is experiencing a bump - daily new cases, but not in daily deaths - though I've not seen data on the percentages of vaccinated vs. not vaccinated. The US has not rejected AZ's vaccine. AZ hasn't applied to the FDA for Emergency Use Authorization.

Chinese vaccines not as efficient against Delta variant: Researcher

After WHO scientist's warning that the Delta variant of COVID-19 is becoming globally dominant, a Chinese disease control researcher claims that antibodies triggered by the two Chinese vaccines — Sinovac and Sinopharm — are less effective against it.

According to Feng Zijian, researcher and former deputy director at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, while these shots do offer some protection against the Delta variant, compared to other variants, these shots are not that effective.   

Feng, without naming the two vaccines said that these vaccines fall into the category of inactivated vaccines, i.e., they contain "killed" or inactivated coronavirus that cannot replicate in human cells.   

Out of the seven vaccines developed in China under the country's mass inoculation scheme, five are inactivated vaccines. This also includes Sinopharm which is in use in countries such as Brazil, Chile and Bahrain, along with the shots developed by Sinovac Biotech.
