 Federal workers get surprise Friday off thanks to new Juneteenth holiday

The White House announced Thursday that most federal workers will have Friday off due to the new Juneteenth federal holiday, which President Biden will sign into law Thursday afternoon.

White House chief of staff Ron Klain announced the surprise three-day weekend on Twitter.

“Today [Biden] will sign the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, establishing June 19th as a federal holiday. As the 19th falls on a Saturday, most federal employees will observe the holiday tomorrow, June 18th,” Klain tweeted.

Juneteenth is the 11th federal holiday and was approved with overwhelming support in Congress. It emerged as a local holiday in Texas that celebrated the date in 1865 when Union Gen. Gordon Granger informed slaves in Galveston that they were free pursuant to the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation that liberated slaves in Confederate states.

A national holiday for an event that happened in Texas?

Why the date of notifying slaves in Galveston rather than the date of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, which ultimately had national impact?

Because then they might have to acknowledge that it was a Republican who freed them?  :shrug:
The date they were notified is irrelevant - weren't the other ex-slaves already notified by then?

I've been watching people both left and right going a bit nuts over this, on twitter.
But people go nuts on twitter anyway.

Never been a big deal, and it has been celebrated in Texas for a long time, as far back as I can recall.

I'm alright with it. Been to a few celebrations myself.
Hermann Park in Houston had a Juneteenth 3 day concert series every year, a lot of blues and soul music.
Everybody got along fine.
Saw some really good people play there.

Trump was going to do this as part of his Platinum Plan he proposed for his next term, but didn't get re-elected (supposedly).

This latest sop to black Americans will make all the whiners and complainers happy and ready to march forward with the rest of Americans.

.....ha, ha, ha,... sorry, couldn't resist. The whiners and complainers will keep on whining and  complaining.
Next holidays......Harriet Tubman's, Malcolm Xs,  Jackie Robinson's, Al Sharpton's, Jesse Jackson's, George Floyd's, and there's a whole list of rappers, black entertainers, and assorted thugs we'll get holidays to celebrate.
