The US will invest more than $3 billion to advance the development of antiviral pills for COVID-19 and other pathogens to prepare for future pandemics, Dr. Anthony Fauci said Thursday.

The nation’s top infectious disease expert announced the $3.2 billion investment as part of a new “antiviral program for pandemics” to develop drugs to address symptoms caused by potentially dangerous viruses.

“It’s a whole-of-government effort aimed at developing the next generation of COVID-19 treatments, as well as preparing us for future threats,” Fauci said at the White House’s coronavirus press briefing.

Fauci said the new program would allocate funds to “accelerating things that are already in progress” for COVID-19 in addition to working on developing new therapies.

“There are few treatments that exist for many of the viruses that have pandemic potential,” he said.

The funding will help speed up the development of COVID-19 pills, which could be on the market by the end of the year pending clinical trials.

Why does that sound so similar to the DARPA project begun in 2018 to develop technologies that could be used to respond quickly to an epidemic threatening to go pandemic? You know, the project that led to the development of the anti-Covid monoclonal antibody treatment distributed by Eli Lilly?

Were Biden and the Dems less stupid they’d build on the relationships developed by OWS and Trump’s anti-Covid efforts with pharmaceuticals and medical products companies. In the real world, Biden and his minions are screwing over those companies, probably because they dared to work with Trump.

The "and other pathogens" point is actually one of the only things and times I have ever agreed with the gnome about.  Why didn't you give this advice to DJT?  Nevermind, we know why.

In all honesty, having  base pharma ready and waiting with infrastructure to respond to pandemics  should have been done as planned after the 2010's Bird Flu scare.

PeteS in CA:
The Dems view pharmaceuticals companies like other large companies, evil cash-cows to be milked. So there is no way in Hades OhBummer! would have done that. The DARPA project I mentioned above probably was proposed in late 2016 (it was announced in very early 2017), but it only got going in 2018 with actual partners.
