--- Quote ---SUSANVILLE, CA — Leaders of Susanville, a city in Northern California, said they plan to sue Gov. Gavin Newsom's administration over the proposed closure of a state prison, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Officials say the closure would severely impact Susanville's local economy, where hundreds are employed by the facility.

In a town of ~18K, "hundreds" of jobs are a pretty big deal. Ask Vallejo residents about how closing Mare Island (25 or 30 years ago) devastated the city!

Among other things, the prison provides training for inmates who work at fighting forest fires. Stupid short-sighted Noisome-decision, part 1!

The excuse for closing the prison is that prison population is down due to Covid releases. Like high recidivism wouldn't fill Susanville's prison fairly quickly after the prison system goes back to normal? Stupid short-sighted Noisome-decision, part 2!

GtHawk:
I can see another proposition in a few years asking Californians to once again fund new prisons that are needed because we have nowhere to put criminals after destroying the perfectly good prisons we had after the democrats emptied them and let all the violent criminals out because it wasn't safe for them! The only people that weren't/aren't safe are the law abiding citizens, the damn criminals were already perfectly safe in quarantine conditions.

I'm not sure we've had a bond initiative to build/expand prisons in several decades.

You are correct, the last was in 1982, but that doesn't change that as the democrats close the prisons and put criminals, many violent or newly trained by their peers back on the street next they will want to sell the properties to fund social programs. So I still say that down the road we will be asked to fund new prisons to put these felons.
