Grant did own one slave, a thirty-five year old man named William Jones, in 1858. Jones may have been a "present" from his father-in-law, or Grant may have purchased him. However, a year thereafter, he wrote, “I do hereby manumit, emancipate and set free said William Jones from slavery forever.”

You,or your source is trying to split hairs. I have even heard some yankees claim Grant never owned ANY slaves because they belonged to his wife.

The one you mentioned just happened to be his man-servant slave.

The one you mentioned just happened to be his man-servant slave.

His only one, and he freed him before the war.  No hair-splitting required.  That reason to believe Grant was evil won't hunt.
