US vaccinations plunge, endangering Biden's July 4th goal

President Biden’s goal to administer at least one shot of the coronavirus vaccine to 70 percent of U.S. adults by Independence Day is hitting a snag as vaccination rates are lagging nationwide.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 63 percent of adults have received at least one shot of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine, while more than 52 percent have been fully vaccinated.

But according to a Washington Post analysis, the current average number of shots per day has sunk below 1 million despite all adults and children over age 12 now being eligible for the critical jab. That’s a significant drop from the peak of 3.4 million daily doses given in mid-April.

The Washington Post reports about 18 million adults need to receive a shot of vaccine by July 4 to meet Biden’s goal.

If one looks at the US vax curve here, one finds that the the slope (= rate) starts to bend more shallow in mid April. That might be a coincidence, or maybe there was an event that decreased public acceptance of the vaccines. The bungling of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine "pause" (a pause that was not necessary, IMO, and its week-long duration egregiously so) happened in mid April.

At a more general level, the anti-vax people (thanks for giving them credibility, LIEden and Kammie, with your pre-election FUD campaign against the Trump Vaccine!), reluctant, and procrastinators are an increasing percentage of the unvaccinated. Also, vaccinating youths age 12-15 was only approved some 4 weeks ago and the under 12 cannot be vaccinated at all, so their percentage of the unvaccinated has only begun to decline.
