San Francisco public schools face an exodus of families and a loss of funds

At the end of the school year, San Francisco public schools counted the number of enrolled students and found it was the lowest number they had seen in decades. The decline in the number of students is likely to amount to a $20 million reduction in funds going into the system.

More than 1,700 San Francisco students left the city’s public schools over the past year, a decline in enrollment that could get worse in the fall, resulting in an estimated $20 million loss in state funding.

As the school year rolled to a close in recent weeks, the district counted 50,955 students in its schools, the lowest enrollment in decades and a 3% drop compared with the end of the 2020 school year, according to a report prepared for a school board budget committee meeting Wednesday.

The decline was seen across racial and income lines, although white enrollment saw the largest loss, a decline of 4%, or 299 students, during the school year.

In short, it looks like things are going to get worse before they get better. And that shouldn’t be a surprise if you look at the mess that the San Francisco school board has created over the past few months.

While tax receipts are not likely to be much reduced, individual schools and districts receive funds based on average daily attendance. Thus fewer students means fewer dollars going into individual schools and districts.

Between union-driven school shutdowns, the district's stupid abortive renaming project, and CRT sweeping schools across the nation's schools, many parents are choosing private schools and homeschooling.

Report: San Francisco School Enrollment Plunges as Mostly White Families Flee District

The San Francisco public school enrollment is plummeting as mostly white families are fleeing the district, a report at the San Francisco Chronicle said Wednesday.

According to the news report, more than 1,700 public school students have left the city’s district over the past year, with possibly a continued exodus into the start of the next academic year in the fall.

The drop in enrollment could lead to a loss in state funding of about $20 million.

The Chronicle noted a school budget report released Wednesday that found enrollment in the district at the end of the current year was 50,955, the lowest in decades, a drop that was more than three percent lower than enrollment at the end of the 2020 academic year.

A drop of 299 white students, or four percent, was the largest loss to enrollment.

The district’s kindergarten class is seeing a nearly ten percent decline from the previous year, with 3,504 children registered, a number that represents a loss of 374 children.

The Chronicle reported kindergarten applications have experienced a 55 percent drop from white families.

School district spokeswoman Gentle Blythe blamed the pandemic for the significant drop in public school enrollments.
