Police are searching for a Nissan and its driver after a military couple were shot and killed outside their home in Virginia, authorities said Wednesday.

Edward McDaniel, 55, and Brenda McDaniel, 63, were fatally shot in the 8000 block of Flint Street in Springfield, an area just southwest of Washington, D.C., according to Fairfax County Police. Both were military veterans. The husband was an active-duty colonel in the U.S. Army, NBC Washington reported.

"They were tragically and horribly murdered in their neighborhood," Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin David said during a news conference on Wednesday.

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the Wednesday shooting of a married couple, both of whom were military physicians.

Edward McDaniel Jr., 55, and his wife, Brenda McDaniel, 63, of Springfield, Virginia, were shot to death at point-blank range in front of their home. Both held the rank of colonel and Edward was still active in the Army.

Deangelo Strand, 19, of Fort Washington, Maryland, and Ronnie Marshall, 20, were arrested Thursday on charges of second-degree murder and use of firearms in the commission of a felony, according to WTOP-TV.

... Police said that the men were co-workers of a relative of the victims. ...

I believe I heard that the "relative" is Mrs. McDaniel's son by a previous marriage. Their son (of their marriage) was home at the time of the killings. No word yet on any involvement on his part.

On Facebook, those who knew the couple praised them highly, with one man labeling them a “power couple.”

“The teenage kids, their friends are bad people,” Carlos Buendia, a neighbor, said to WUSA9. “They bring weapons into the neighborhood.” ...
