Family of professor who claimed to be Cherokee says she is NOT Native American and STILL has a job at U. of California 14 years after her race faking was first uncovered

The family of a professor who claimed to be Cherokee has said she is not Native American after it was revealed she is still working at the University of California - 14 years after her ancestry was first questioned.

Andrea Smith, a noted scholar in Native American studies who grew up in Long Beach, California, had told friends her mother and grandparents were Oklahoma Cherokee and her dad was Ojibwe.

But in 2007 officials from the Cherokee Nation began probing her claims. 

Then in 2008 Cherokee academic Steve Russell questioned her claims in an article called 'When does ethnic fraud matter?'

Later that year Smith got a new job at at the University of California as an assistant professor of media and cultural studies. She no longer identified as Cherokee in her official bios. But she used the identity in interviews and lectures.

In a school district near me, somebody - perhaps the superintendent - unilaterally and without notice (or input from the school board), decreed that the high school mascot of an Indian brave riding a horse was offensive. This upset the locals, and they held a rally. As you might expect, some "Indians" in town showed up to hog the TV camera and tell everyone how offensive and demeaning this mascot of 100 years was to them. I don't know what proof they offered that they were Indians. They said it, and that was good enough. Certainly good enough for a gullible TV reporter. Perhaps they got their official tribal ID cards from Lizzie Warren or this woman.

My idiot Marxist brother, with whom I have no relationship, insists he's part Shawnee. I did a DNA test: our parents passed on to us nothing but lily white western European DNA.

Are such people's lives so devoid of meaning, attention, the benefits of affirmative action, whatever - that they feel compelled to lie about something so utterly beyond their control?

Some White guy claiming to be Native American and became a professor of ethnic studies or something like that.
Elizabeth Warren did the same thing.

It seems to be common in academic circles to claim Native American Heritage to gain 'minority status' advantage.
