BOOM! CDC Director Finally Admits that COVID Cases are Hugely Over-Counted — Just as Gateway Pundit and Donald Trump Reported in August

In August 2020 The Gateway Pundit’s Joe Hoft posted an article about COVID-19 that sent shockwaves throughout the internet — The CDC website admitted that only around 6% of COVID recorded deaths were due entirely to the Coronavirus-

SHOCK REPORT: This Week CDC Quietly Updated COVID-19 Numbers – Only 9,210 Americans Died From COVID-19 Alone – Rest Had Different Other Serious Illnesses

The gist of the reporte was that COVID-19 is not nearly as deadly as first projected by the WHO and then by Dr. Tony Fauci and Dr. Debra Birx.  Based on CDC numbers in Ausust  only 6% of all deaths attributed to COVID-19 were instances where the only factor in the individual’s death was due to COVI9-19.

The GatewayPundit article is conflating two different things: cases; deaths attributed to Covid.

The cases numbers are basically correct. Contrary to what some want to believe, the Covid PCR tests won't give positives for, e.g., influenza viruses or rhinoviruses. The problems with the PCR tests are in usage and interpretation. PCR tests detect SARS2 RNA. The tests cannot discern a live virus from a fragment of a dead virus. The PCR tests also give a very imprecise idea of the concentration of viruses in the tested person. Generally the more cycles before a positive result, the lower the concentration, but that is a long way from precise. Putting it all together, the cases numbers are basically correct (actually, the numbers are low, due to asymptomatic people not being tested and some sick people choosing not to get tested).

The Covid deaths numbers are severely distorted. Our system counts as "Covid Deaths": people who died because of the pneumonia or other effects the SARS2 virus causes; people with serious health problems pushed over the edge by Covid; some people who died of other causes who had tested Covid-positive either soon before or soon after dying.

Clickbaity exaggerations and conflations like the OP article are a big part of why I don't trust unconfirmed GatewayPundit material. GatewayPundit also doesn't fact-check very well.
