California scores staggering $75B budget surplus
By Reid Wilson - 05/10/21 02:35 PM EDT

California’s budget is in the black — by a staggering amount.

A state that expected perhaps the most severe budget crunch in American history instead has a more than $75 billion budget surplus, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said Monday, after a booming stock market and better-than-anticipated tax revenues over the pandemic-plagued year.

As recently as a year ago, California’s top elected officials were staring into a budgetary abyss that made the Great Recession look like a pothole. Newsom’s office projected a budget deficit of up to $54 billion, or about a quarter of the entire state budget. Legislators prepared to cut state government to the bone.

“We were scared, all of us,” state Assemblyman Chad Mayes (I) told The Hill last month. “We all agreed, 'Hey, we’re going to take a hit because we’re heavily dependent on high-income earners.'”

But the stock market’s rebound, and its yearlong rally, have helped repair the gap. California is unusually reliant on receipts from capital gains tax, so a strong year in the market is good news for state government. Initial public offerings from companies like DoorDash and Airbnb helped, while sales tax revenues also came in in greater amounts than expected.

Newsom said in an address Monday that he would propose using much of the money to fund what he said would be the biggest economic recovery package in state history.

Newsom’s $100 billion proposal would add $12 billion more in direct payments to California residents, including $600 to most people and an extra $500 to families with dependents. The payments would go to families making less than $75,000 a year.

Federal bailout money and closing many prisons by letting the criminals free has improved their cash flow apparently.

Other states should pass laws to not allow criminals with unfinished sentences to reside in their states short of continuing their sentences in those other state's prisons. In other words, keep California's criminals in California...

yeah I noticed. Even Townhall News acts as though the surplus is due to Newsom’s firm fiscal hand and stellar leadership, not Auntie Nanna’s greasy mitts. The part of the country that didn’t get bailed out should be pretty pissed off right now.

Yeah if Newsome and the democrats did so well then why are businesses and anyone that can fleeing the high taxes, destructive regulations, soaring food and gas costs and policies that make American citizens and legal residents second class citizens compared to the ILLEGAL ALIENS (not migrants or immigrants) and why are the rest of Americans paying to shore up the failed democrat cities of San Franshitco and Los Crapeles along with an entire state that should under proper administration and sensible regulation be more than capable of creating an honest surplus.

If the democrats stay in power in California, and it would take a crazy number of sudden deaths to change, and they continue on their destructive path it will be interesting to see how they manage to raise revenue in a state populated almost completely by homeless, unemployed, and illegals with the balance predominately cockroaches of the socialist persuasion

California is rapidly becoming a place where the very wealth and the poor who serve them live. The middle class is being destroyed and looking for an exit.

Maybe they can rename California "Newark"?

Let's see....

$42 BILLION IN OUR TAX MONEY (COVID relief)

 leaves 33 billion in 'surplus'.

So cut the COVID money to 11 billion and save the rest of us the burden.

Or better yet, don't give them any.

Well, is pretty much the essence of communism.

I can't remember the last time California had an actual meaningful surplus, Wilson or before probably. Otherwise it's pretty much smoke, mirrors and bullshit because the democrats always spend every cent the state has, and all they can borrow from the future. You know just like on the federal level.

The State of California uses "creative" accounting techniques and under-funds pensions. A CPA or CFO who did such @#$% would be modeling orange jumpsuits in the GreyBar Hotel.
If, as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2021/robert-f-kennedy-jr-said-the-covid-19-vaccine-is-the-deadliest-vaccine-ever-made-thats-not-true/ , https://gospelnewsnetwork.org/2021/11/23/covid-shots-are-the-deadliest-vaccines-in-medical-history/ , The Vaccine is deadly, where in the US have Pfizer and Moderna hidden the millions of bodies of those who died of "vaccine injury"? Is reality a Big Pharma Shill?

Millions now living should have died. Anti-Covid-Vaxxer ghouls hardest hit.

I don't know but it really angers me that California with all it's natural resources, both mineral and natural beauty is being destroyed by socialist/communists that are demanding everyone else lives by a standard that they put themselves above. The democrats are incapable of continuing to run California in the destructive manner they have without large cash infusions from the feds, and every other state and it's residents should be outraged and refuse, and that is exactly what I a California resident want them to do! The sooner the democrats crash the state the sooner we have a hope of recovering it. And it saddens me that also means more liberals will escape to other states **nononono*
