Florida Rep. Val Demings reportedly plans to enter her state’s 2022 senatorial election.
Demings is in her fourth term as the representative from Florida’s 10th Congressional District. She served as Orlando’s first female police chief and gained notoriety during former President Donald Trump's first impeachment when she served as a House manager. She was previously considered to be President Joe Biden’s running mate.
Demings's decision to run against GOP Sen. Marco Rubio was first reported Tuesday by Politico. She was said to be considering a run for statewide office, though it was unclear if she would challenge Rubio, who is in the middle of his second term, or Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist announced that he will be running for governor while Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried is expected to enter the race.
