While I hate to see people not be able to collect benefits who truly can't find work, but I think many people are sitting back collecting when they could be employed.  Perhaps not making as much money, but the gov't hand out needs to stop at some point in time, unless everyone is willing to allow socialism to continue.

Perhaps other states will follow.

Montana plans to cancel unemployment benefits to address ‘severe workforce shortage’

Montana plans to stop some of its federally-funded unemployment benefits to address “the state’s severe workforce shortage,” according to its labor department, which will leave many out-of-work residents without any support at all.

“Nearly every sector in our economy faces a labor shortage,” Governor Greg Gianforte said in a statement on Tuesday. “The vast expansion of federal unemployment benefits is now doing more harm than good.”

Instead, the state will begin to offer return-to-work bonuses to help employers looking to hire.

Starting June 27, Montanans will lose access to the extra $300 in weekly unemployment benefits, but maintain their regular benefits. Contractors, gig workers, and others will also lose access to the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program, meaning those workers won’t get any benefits.............

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.

Seriously, I could have made (easily) 10K more last year if I had chosen to draw unemployment over getting a different job. In the meantime, I have fed my family, paid the bills, and learned another skill set. Now, hopefully, I'll be back at work in my old job within the month.

But pretty often, those unfilled jobs are notices looking for someone with niche experience (and lots of it) to fill a narrowly described job, sometimes for peanuts.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

A courageous move by Montana.

Could such a policy be applied to discourage illegitimacy, as well...?
(I have ideas as to how to do this, but most folks here wouldn't like them)

Unfortunately the pay rate around here isn't great as most jobs are in the tourist industry or service industry; however, it you're willing to put forth a little more effort, there are ways to make some pretty decent money.

I see help wanted signs quite often right now, and we have many people moving into the area and they can't build houses quickly enough and housing inventory is very low. I think we're going to quickly run into the situation where jobs are going to become scarce.  Hopefully these people did some research before they moved into the area as far as jobs.
