Why Amnesty Is the Wrong Way to Go

A liberal columnist depicts them as “living in the shadows.” A conservative commentator calls them a “huge, subterranean population” that exists in fear of one day being “whisked away by government agents.” A Los Angeles religious leader bemoans their exploitation at the hands of “unscrupulous employers” who know they “are reluctant to seek legal recourse.”

But are they? Contrast those characterizations of illegal immigrants in the United States with these actual events: Outside Phoenix, dozens of female illegal immigrants march in protest against their employer, whom they accuse of sexual harassment. An illegal immigrant and labor activist from Houston travels to Washington to meet openly with Sen. Ted Kennedy and Justice Department officials. In Los Angeles, the labor movement comes back from the brink of extinction by successfully organizing illegals employed as janitors and hotel service workers. Countless news stories highlight illegal immigrants as proud homeowners, successful businesspeople and ambitious high school graduates openly seeking admission to California’s public universities.

Amnesty is the wrong way to go for two basic reasons:

* It rewards breaking the law;

* It is the seed of a new pool of illegals hoping for amnesty because the previous pool received it.

If you want more of a specific type of behavior, subsidize it. Basic behavioral science.

Its really simple GOPe - amnesty subsidizes illegal immigration.

If they don't like it here, let them GO HOME.

No need to give them amnesty.    Give them amnesty for being in the country illegally today, and they'll still be here illegally tomorrow, so then we can arrest them and deport them because now we have their addresses?

No.

I actually fully support granting illegal aliens amnesty.   All they have to do to get their amnesty is to go back where they came from, fill out a form confessing their crime, and then wait, at the end of the line, for us to call them up and give them permission to come into the United States.  We'll forgive them for their earlier crime of entering the US illegally if they don't do it again.

Can't get any fairer than that.

Diamond thieves and bank robbers are expected to return the stolen loot before they are forgiven.  Rapists have to restore their victim's virginity before we forgive them, don't they?  Why should invaders who've committed the crime of border rape be held to a different standard, where they get to keep their stolen hymens when they come out of hydin'?
