Schumer Introduces Bill to Make City of Washington a State—With Two Senators

(CNSNews.com) - Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer introduced in the Senate on Thursday the bill that had passed the House that day to make the District of Columbia a state that—like all other states—would send to members to the Senate.
“This is about democracy,†Schumer said in a tweet. “It’s about self-government. It’s about voting rights.
“I was proud to re-introduce this bill in the Senate, and we are working to make #DCStatehood a reality,†he said.
The bill—H.R. 51—passed the House on Thursday by a vote of 216 to 208. No Democrat voted against it. No Republican voted for it.
“This bill provides for admission into the United States of the state of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth, composed of most of the territory of the District of Columbia,†says the official summary of the bill. “The commonwealth shall be admitted to the Union on an equal footing with the other states.
