Kamala Harris on Tuesday said black women in the U.S. are more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications because, in part, of “systemic racial inequities.”

The White House issued its first-ever presidential proclamation marking Black Maternal Health Week, where Harris claimed there are racial gaps in pregnancy and childbirth-related deaths and complications in the United States.

“Black women in our country are facing a maternal health crisis. We know the primary reasons why: systemic racial inequities and implicit bias,” Harris said, as noted by the New York Times.

“Black women deserve to be heard. Their voices deserve to be respected,” Harris said. “And like all people, they must be treated with dignity.”

The bottom line is choices. At present, the consequences of unwise choices outweigh and obscure whatever bias is "out there". Until the unwisdoms are recognized and dealt with, little or no improvement can be made.
