Hideki Matsuyama claims Masters title, first Japanese golfer to win major championship

Hideki Matsuyama is officially in a class of his own.

On Sunday, Matsuyama, who shot a 1-over 73 to win the Masters by one stroke, became the first male golfer from Japan to claim one of golf’s major championships. Matsuyama held off Will Zalatoris, who finished with a 9-under 279.

He became the second man from an Asian country to win a major. Y.E. Yang of South Korea won the 2009 PGA Championship at Hazeltine over Tiger Woods.

Matsuyama, a five-time winner on the PGA Tour, took control of the tournament on Saturday when he shot a 65. He was in command in the final round on Sunday, but his supporters had to hold their breath at No. 15 when he skipped the ball into the water, which led to a bogey and it lessened his lead to two shots over Xander Schauffele...........

Initially, it looked like Justin Rose was the man to beat, but he could not maintain his high level of play for the four days. Hideki played steady golf, and his bad holes managed to be a little "less bad" than the other guys'. What bugged me the whole time was the announcing crew. You could tell they were rooting for anyone but Hideki right up to the very last hole, especially after all their favorites - Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Bryson DeChambeau - spit the bit. (They also saw fit to mention Tiger Woods about 50 times an hour, which was tiresome).

Pro golf - men's and women's - is one of the few professional sports left that hasn't sold its soul completely to leftist woke culture, so I'm happy to spend a little time watching it.

As for TW, I'll defer to the NY Post's Phil Mushnick:
Quote
...  Even those who wouldn’t recognize a con if it were sold with multiple, fill-in-the-blanks certificates of authenticity, now know that this 25-year anointment of Tiger Woods as a saint on earth was a media con. Again, it wasn’t enough that he was the world’s best golfer, he additionally had to be the best son, best husband, best father and finest human being.

But if that had been you instead of Woods, the one who, unimpeded at almost double the speed limit, rolled his SUV off the road, you’d have been charged with a pile of negligent driving charges — even while hospitalized and before your blood results returned.  ...

Yet, CBS’s shared telecast on ESPN on Thursday unplugged live Masters coverage for a lengthy, hallowed homage to Woods, still at the top of humanity’s leaderboard.

Woods’ absence was noted by ESPN’s Masters host Scott Van Pelt, the reason unspoken. “Tiger knows that the competitors here are thinking about him,” he preached.

He then threw it to Curtis Strange, who recalled Woods’ Masters accomplishments, specifically heading into the waiting arms of “his family” — as if he were the first and only Masters or hop scotch champ to be greeted by loved ones.

Van Pelt: “It was impossible to miss a young man hugging his father in ’97, and that man, now a father, [two years ago] hugging his children in the very same spot.” Ugh.

Woods, now on at least two self-inflicted occasions — a third was when he crashed his car while on the prescription sedative Ambien after that fight with his now ex-wife — is lucky to be alive, lucky his kids still have a father, lucky to have not caused serious injury or death to the children of other parents. ...

My in-laws used to watch golf all the time.  Sometimes we'd watch a game along with them, but golf really isn't my thing, but all things considering you are right, one of the few sports left that hasn't bowed to the woke culture.
