Coverage Set for NASA’s SpaceX Crew-2 Briefings, Events, Broadcasts

NASA will provide coverage of the upcoming prelaunch and launch activities for the agency’s SpaceX Crew-2 mission with astronauts to the International Space Station. This is the second crew rotation flight of the SpaceX Crew Dragon and the first with two international partners. The flight follows certification by NASA for regular flights to the space station as part of the agency’s Commercial Crew Program.

The launch, on a Falcon 9 rocket, is targeted for 6:11 a.m. EDT Thursday, April 22, from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Crew Dragon is scheduled to dock to the space station about 5:30 a.m. Friday, April. 23. Prelaunch activities, launch, and docking will air live on NASA Television, the NASA app, and the agency’s website.

The Crew-2 flight will carry NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur – who will serve as the mission’s spacecraft commander and pilot, respectively – along with JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency)  astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Thomas Pesquet, who will serve as mission specialists to the space station for a six-month science mission.

The deadline has passed for media accreditation for in-person coverage of this launch. More information about media accreditation is available by emailing: ksc-media-accreditat@mail.nasa.gov.

All media participation in the following news conferences will be remote except where specifically listed below, and only a limited number of media will be accommodated at Kennedy due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Please note that the Kennedy Press Site facilities will remain closed throughout these events for the protection of Kennedy employees and journalists, except for a limited number of media who will receive confirmation in writing in the coming days.

SpaceX test-fires rocket ahead of Crew-2 astronaut launch for NASA

Space.com By Amy Thompson 4/17/2021

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — SpaceX has fired up the rocket that will ferry its next crew of astronauts to the International Space Station next week.

The private spaceflight company conducted a static-fire test on Saturday (April 22) of its Falcon 9 rocket at Pad 39A here at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The test is one of the last major milestones ahead of a planned launch on Thursday (April 22).

The routine preflight test kicked off the countdown to the highly-anticipated flight of the company's second operational mission of its Dragon crew capsule, called Crew-2. The spacecraft is bound for the International Space Station, carrying with it two NASA astronauts and one astronaut each from the Japanese and European space agencies.

The test occurred as expected in the predawn hours on Saturday. Smoke and fire billowed briefly as the rocket's nine Merlin 1D engines were lit. The brief ignition, known as a static-fire test, is a standard part of prelaunch procedures and one of the last major milestones before liftoff.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — SpaceX’s most international crew of astronauts yet has arrived at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center.

The two Americans, one French and one Japanese are scheduled to blast off for the International Space Station next Thursday, which is Earth Day.

Officials said Friday that’s a coincidence and a reminder of NASA’s core mission of studying the home planet.

This will be SpaceX’s third launch of astronauts in less than a year, but the first to use a recycled Falcon rocket and Dragon capsule.

How to watch SpaceX’s third crewed mission to the ISS

The Verge By Joey Roulette Apr 22, 2021

https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/22/22395543/spacex-liftoff-how-to-watch-nasa-iss-third-crewed-mission

Liftoff is set for 5:49AM ET on Friday

SpaceX is slated to launch its third crew to the International Space Station early Friday morning, ferrying two astronauts from NASA, one from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and the first European Space Agency astronaut to fly a private US spacecraft to orbit. The four-person crew will launch atop SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket at 5:49AM ET on Friday.

The mission, dubbed Crew-2, marks the second operational mission under the Commercial Crew Program, NASA’s public-private initiative to revive its human spaceflight capabilities after a 10-year dependence on Russian rockets. It will mark the first time NASA astronauts fly a reused crew capsule — Crew-2’s ride first flew in May 2020 as SpaceX’s first astronaut mission, carrying Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley.

The crew includes NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough, the mission’s spacecraft commander, and Megan McArthur, serving as the pilot. JAXA astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet, a French aerospace engineer, will serve as mission specialists. All the astronauts are in Florida ahead of the launch, and they’ll wake up at 11:09PM ET Thursday to prepare for flight.

Elon Musk says reusability will ‘revolutionize space’ after recycled rocket launches astronauts from Florida

American Military News by Caroline Glenn - Orlando Sentinel   April 23, 2021

https://americanmilitarynews.com/2021/04/elon-musk-says-reusability-will-revolutionize-space-after-recycled-rocket-launches-astronauts-from-florida/

Quote
An hour before sunrise Friday, four astronauts launched from Florida for SpaceX’s third crewed mission to the International Space Station. The rocket’s trail glowed in the pitch-black sky as much of the Space Coast was still asleep.

NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur, joined by France’s Thomas Pesquet and Japan’s Akihiko Hoshide, lifted off from launchpad 39A at Kennedy Space Center on time at 5:49 a.m. They were expected to dock at the ISS in about 24 hours and live aboard the station for six months conducting science experiments.

“It’s great to be back in space for all of us,” Kimbrough told ground teams just after 6 a.m. as the rocket flew at 17,000 mph.

The mission known as Crew-2 is the first time astronauts reached orbit in a refurbished rocket and capsule under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which largely relies on private companies like Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The Falcon 9 rocket is the same one that launched Crew-1 in November, and the Dragon capsule the foursome will ride in also carried Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley.
