San Gabriel Mission To Get New Roof This Week

--- Quote ---Since a fire tore through its roof last July and singed its nave, the San Gabriel Mission has been walled off to devotees. But a new chapter for the mission begins Monday, when work crews begin installing a permanent replacement roof.

Mission spokeswoman Terri Heurta said the roof work is expected to take three-to-four weeks if all goes as planned.

“As you can imagine, this is an old building, so we don’t know how the building will react once they start to cut those transverse beams and try to put in new steel beams,” Huerta said.

She said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

I thought we had an existing thread about this fire but after several search phrases didn't find it. What's weird to me is that some 9 months after the fire it's still "under investigation".

And it will stay under investigation until they find some racist White nazi militia member to blame.

Like most California missions, Mission San Gabriel was built in the 18th century. Mission San Gabriel was founded by Father Junipero Serra. So, much of the construction is quite old - dried out wood, electrical wiring done before modern electrical codes and with deteriorated insulation. While there are a few potential activist/terrorist-suspect-types, the most likely cause is an electrical short or bad connection.

It was arson:

--- Quote ---A man has been charged with arson in connection with a devastating fire that ripped through the historic San Gabriel Mission last summer, causing millions of dollars in damages, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.

“The loss to the mission was in the millions of dollars but the loss to the community is immeasurable,” L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement.

John David Corey, aka “Joker,” is facing two felony counts of arson of an inhabited structure and one count each of arson during a state of emergency, first-degree residential burglary and possession of flammable material, the DA’s office reported.

Prosecutors say Corey broke into the historic mission and set it on fire.

Was it ever determined whether this guy was doing his part to tear down traditional icons as was so popular a few months back, or is he just nuts?
