Tensions flare over Senate filibuster
By Jordain Carney - 03/17/21 06:00 AM EDT

Tensions are reaching a boiling point in the Senate over the fate of the legislative filibuster as Democratic support grows for eliminating the procedural roadblock.

Senators traded barbs on Tuesday, foreshadowing the likely political firestorm awaiting Democrats if they decide to move forward with reforming the filibuster — something they don’t yet have the votes to do. The exchanges came just hours before President Biden added fuel to the debate by saying for the first time that he supports changing the filibuster rules.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) warned that removing the need for 60 votes to advance most legislation would lead to dire consequences.

“Let me say this very clearly for all 99 of my colleagues: Nobody serving in this chamber can even begin, can even begin, to imagine what a completely scorched-earth Senate would look like,” McConnell said from the Senate floor.

Democrats Plot To Kill Filibuster Because They Only Care About Power
March 17, 2021 By Jordan Davidson

A rising number of Democratic legislators are evaluating potentially abolishing or changing the filibuster so they can force their agenda through the Senate without formal protest from Republicans. Proposals for removing the procedure recently ramped up as legislators on the left side of the political aisle continue to peddle their 800-plus-page election overhaul bill as necessary to preserve voting and civil rights, especially for minorities.

“I’m not going to say that you must get rid of the filibuster [entirely]. I would say you would do well to develop a Manchin-Sinema rule on getting around the filibuster as it relates to race and civil rights,” said House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina.

“We’re headed for a showdown between the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the filibuster — a relic of Jim Crow,” Rep. Joaquin Castro of Texas warned in a statement to Politico Playbook.

The procedures now change according to who is in office and which side they are on.  Republicans in the oval office and obstructions and blockades to power built and re-enforced.  Democrats in the oval office, all procedures and restrictions to keeping the President from being a dictator are offensive and must be torn down.  It's not like we haven't seen this hypocrisy before.

In an interview with Clinton's former press secretary, Biden was reflecting how much different the filibuster was back in the day.  He gave a romanticized account of how dedicated the Democrats had to be in maintaining control of the floor and how hard they had to work to deny civil rights to African-Americans.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-
