Chief of Cherokee Nation says it's time Jeep stop using tribe's name

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is currently the brand’s best-selling model.

“I think we’re in a day and age in this country where it’s time for both corporations and team sports to retire the use of Native American names, images and mascots from their products, team jerseys and sports in general," Chuck Hoskin Jr., principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, told Car and Driver.
Jeep has sold SUVs under the Cherokee name for decades.
In response, Jeep said the names have been carefully chosen to “honor and celebrate Native American people for their nobility, prowess, and pride,” according to Car and Driver.

The Cherokee Nation is asking Jeep to stop using the tribe’s name for some of its bestselling SUVs.

Jeep has sold SUVs under the Cherokee name for decades, with the Jeep Grand Cherokee currently the brand’s bestselling model and the Jeep Cherokee its third bestseller. The original Jeep Cherokee was first introduced in 1974.

But now as some companies and sports teams have recently stopped using names and logos depicting ethnic stereotypes and caricatures, the principal chief of the Cherokee Nation said it’s time for Jeep to part ways with the tribe’s name.

“I think we’re in a day and age in this country where it’s time for both corporations and team sports to retire the use of Native American names, images and mascots from their products, team jerseys and sports in general, Chuck Hoskin Jr., principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, told Car and Driver.

“I’m sure this comes from a place that is well-intended, but it does not honor us by having our name plastered on the side of a car,” he said.

I say it is a compliment!  They want to forget the name, CHEROKEE?   This is advertisement for them.  What an azz.

From the article:
"The Cherokee Nation is asking Jeep to stop using the tribe’s name for some of its bestselling SUVs.
Jeep has sold SUVs under the Cherokee name for decades"

I don't think this argument will hold water in any rational court. (remember that I said, a "rational" court)

The name "Cherokee" has literally been "in use too long" for the "Cherokee Nation" to raise an objection. They've lost control over their "trademark".

Of course, there may be a leftist judge in a non-rational court somewhere who will side with them at the trial level. But I sense such a ruling won't hold up in appeal...

Have no idea how a court would rule, but from what I read these people call themselves (with our pronunciation) Aniyvwiya.  The term Cherokee is an blend from a spanish (circa 1755) term Tchalaquei, and /or a mix of the term of Creek for Cvlakke.  The origin is from 18th and 19th century colonist, not even the Indians themselves.  How can they trademark a term that wasn't even of their origin?

This lawsuit is about as ridiculous as peoiple in Norway suing the Minnesota Football team for using the term Viking.

OTOH, does anyone not think that this might be more of a shakedown for a few million dollars?
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

If these dumb asses continue self-cancelling like this in another couple of generations people won't even know what an American Indian was.

Sure they will, to them American Indian will mean Casinos, fireworks and shitty gas. Remember all those Indians complaining about Espera Oscar de Corti a Sicilian getting the  injun gigs as Iron Eyes Cody in movies and commercials about pollution? Me neither. It's not like AMC/Jeep didn't name the Cherokee to embrace the positives of the Indian Tribe. They should have just stuck with Wagoneer name and variants of it and never had to deal with this constant victim hood and cultural appropriation bullshit. Which come to think of it, haven't the Native Americans(we're all of us born here Native Americans damnit, they just came from elsewhere sooner) appropriated Horses, alcohol, Western civilization clothing and food?
