Yep, exactly like that "very stable genius" who knows "all the best words" and "only picks the best people" while playing flying, invisible, 9-dimensional stealth jedi chess that *no one* else understands.

But it seems that some get credit for that kind of practical approach, while others get blamed for it.  Now why would that be?

So you can argue that calling McConnell a liar indicates a lack of spine, but no one will believe you.  Trump's "steel spine" manifested itself in late night tweet meltdowns reminiscent of a teenage girl jilted by her prom date; Cruz takes principled positions and sticks with them, in person and straight to people's face.  And that's precisely why he doesn't pass your fictional test for being "consequential"; he actually *does* the things you credit Trump for doing - he says his piece without apology and lets the chips fall where they may.  That's not a recipe for popularity.  I don't agree with everything Cruz says and does, but I respect him.

It continues to amaze me that the person who probably did more than any other *materially* to support Trump's agenda, certainly during the EV count, is the one you continue to belittle and criticize.  The only thing I can figure is that Cruz found principled reasons to support Trump's agenda rather than slavishly falling into mind-numbed sycophancy, and for some reason that bothers you.

Why would that bother you @Right_in_Virginia ?

I only read the last line of your post @HoustonSam  and decided that was enough condescension for my tastes.  I will, however, be happy to read any non-condescending post you make on another subject.

To sum up where we are:  I'm not interested in another Trump v Cruz discussion.  Nor do I want to continue scratching beneath Cruz's façade.  Getting back to the topic of this thread:   I simply think Cruz made a mistake to feed the negative perceptions voters have of him.

I think you all have misunderstood what @Right_in_Virginia and I were trying to say.

We feel Cruz made a huge error leaving Texas for Cancun..I don't care if it was to escort his family to Mexico...the perception is there that he left his state when it needed him...he is their voice in DC to get help and aide.

Whether he runs for president or re-election this will come back to haunt him..it was a tactical error on his part and his staff.

Yup.  That's it.  He's now got damage control ahead of him.

You're wrong.
I wish I was wrong.  I have a very close relative that worked for Cruz when he was Solicitor General in Texas.  He was not known as a people person and was very challenging to get along with....  He is a VERY talented legislator, but just doesn't come across very well on the public stage.

I supported Cruz over Trump in the Texas primary.  He just doesn't have the gift of BS like is needed to run for President.

Yup.  That's it.  He's now got damage control ahead of him.

Hello....at the rate things are going there is zero chance that a conservative is going to remain seated or gain a seat.  Not going to happen.  Notta.

Damage control?  If he would have stayed home then he would have been accused of not taking care of his family especially with two kids.

Whatever Cruz does the GOPe, the MSM and the leftists will find fault.  He stood up for Trump many times and this last time put a   target on his back, BIGLY.

I get what your saying .... only difference is ... I feel unless your name is Mitch or Mittens as far as the GOPe and the DEMS are concerned, you're not going anywhere.  Even at that, the DEMS will eventually show them the door as well.

Gee... maybe, Hannity will now give Cruz the air time and boost he gave Trump.  Just sayin'.  Not going to make a darn bit of difference now.

And yet everyone praises Trump to the high Heavens for being gruff...blunt and not people friendly.

He's one of...if not the most Conservative politician we've had run for President since Reagan.  He speaks to the people...not the tv cameras and the idiots on CNN.

Please see my post about "optics" earlier and why I give less than a damn about whether he looks good for the press or has the gift of BS.

If he stands up for and espouses the conservative principals most Americans live their life by...he's pro military and strong on defense...fiscally conservative...which he checks all those blocks then optics be dammed he's the one this country needs.

Cruz was my write in vote in the national election in 2016.

And I would have no reservation voting for him again in 2024.

:seeya:

I agree with you @Right_in_Virginia that Cruz made a mistake; he should have let his wife handle whatever was necessary in getting his daughters to Cancun.  My position is not that Cruz is blameless, it's that *you* made a mistake in advocating a clearly inconsistent standard here regarding "optics."

Contrary to a suggestion posted elsewhere on this thread, I don't want to see Trump supporters excluded; I find your thinking frequently a fair challenge and I've learned some things from you which I appreciate.  But I notice this is the second time you've abandoned the field when I challenged you.  Don't expect that challenge to stop just because you've called it "condescension;" you see I've learned a thing or two from Trump myself, I really don't care what shaming language you resort to.

Have a good evening, I look forward to future topics where we can be completely in alignment.

While I have no first or second-hand experience, I suspect you are correct @mrpotatohead.  As strong a Cruz supporter as I am, I doubt he has the charisma necessary to win the Oval Office.  And that's a criticism of the voters, not a criticism of Cruz.

I'll continue supporting him anyway.

Good interview of Cruz on the Hannity show.  Ted said his electricity had been off for 2 days and it was 30 degrees in the house.  His girls wanted to take a trip...so they did.

Quote
After landing back in the United States, Mr. Cruz offered a new statement with a different tone from earlier in the day, when he had tried to explain the vacation without regrets and left the impression that it might have always been a one-day trip for him. Speaking to reporters after his arrival home, he conceded that the trip was “obviously a mistake” and said he had begun having “second thoughts” as soon as he boarded the plane to Mexico intent on a few days of remote work in the sun.

“The plan had been to stay through the weekend with the family,” he said, framing the decision as a parent’s attempt to placate his two daughters, ages 10 and 12, after a “tough week.”

Heidi's texts have been made public blowing the just dropping off the family excuse out of the water.

I do hope Cruz fires the staffer who came up with the "just being a good dad" defense.  And I hope next time he's in such a jam he calls and asks me to write his FIRST statement.   333cleo

I had occasion to be left with an opened and half used carton of half and half... I ain't ever going to use half and half for anything in my normal world... So just to get rid of it, I poured it into chocolate pudding, using it first, and then  topping off the mixture with milk, as normal...

I'll tell you what... That pudding was magical.
