Minneapolis City Council Members Unveil Proposal to Abolish Police Department

Members of the Minneapolis City Council are seeking to get a proposal to abolish the city’s police department on the ballot in November.

If successful, voters could decide the fate of public safety by voting for or against a question that would disband the Minneapolis Police Department in favor of a public safety office that would employ police officers in a nontraditional capacity.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported City Council members Phillipe Cunningham, Steve Fletcher and Jeremy Schroeder offered a plan to disband the department in favor of a new Department of Public Safety.

Is this proposal basically a name change rather than something more serious? The article is vague on details and somewhat contradictory, while the article title goes way beyond what vague details are in the article.

The City of Sunnyvale, near where I live, does not have a police department. Some time in the distant past they organized their police and fire people into a Department of Public Safety. The policing and fire-fighting is real, just a different name. They have the traditional rank titles and uniforms on the police side.

So this proposal may be a doubling down on stupid, but it could also be largely cosmetic (except if street level officers are answerable to the politicians in the city council, a compounding of stupid).

What you’re saying is probably right but this is the Minneapolis city Council. They’ve been doubling down a stupid since they’ve come to power
