Fox News’s Tucker Carlson blasted Dr. Anthony Fauci on Wednesday over the various positions he’s taken on masks in the past year as a means of helping prevent the transmission of COVID-19.

Fauci joined in with other “experts” who are now recommending people wear two masks instead of one, calling it “common sense that it likely would be more effective.” Some networks have even touted studies that recommend wearing three masks.

“So double-masking is ‘just common sense, just common sense!'” Carlson said mocking the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director. “How long are people going to put up with this? Follow the logic. Wouldn’t it just be safer at this point just for people to stop breathing entirely? You wouldn’t get COVID. You kind of get the impression that’s kind of where Tony Fauci may be a few months from now.”

Fauci’s latest position is a far cry from what he originally said about masks on March 8, 2020—that people “should not be walking around with masks.”

“When you’re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it’s not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is,” he said at the time. “And, often, there are unintended consequences — people keep fiddling with the mask and they keep touching their face.”

Carlson also played an "interpretive dance" video made by teachers in Chicago entitled "Stay safe, no school!" that was truly disturbing. Clearly we're dealing with unbalanced people here.

A recommendation about double-masking by White House advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci isn't receiving any praise from one of the nation's leading experts on COVID-19.

Dr. Michael Osterholm, who leads the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, refuted Dr. Fauci's claim that double-layering would likely make masking "more effective."

"I do not support the idea of two masks," said Dr. Osterholm, who spoke to WCCO Radio's Cory Hepola on Wednesday morning. ...  Doubling up on masks would likely lead to more harm, than good, when it comes to cloth face masks, or even N95 respirators.

"If you put more of it on, all it does is it impedes the air coming through and it makes it blow in and out along the sides. The fit becomes even less effective," Osterholm said. "Double masking could be a detriment to your protection." ...

The only instance in which double-masking could be useful is if one is one of those cosmetic-value-only cloth masks (which of themselves do almost nothing). Double N95 would be moronic and dangerous.

A top infectious disease expert has warned that wearing two masks can “do more harm” if one of the face coverings isn’t being correctly worn.

Michael Osterholm, who was an advisor to President Joe Biden’s transition team, said that the problem occurs with masks that have an “already compromised fit or filtration capacity,” allowing respiratory droplets to escape out of holes.

“If you add on another mask, you may actually make it tougher for the air to move through the two-cloth area, and then at that point it causes more air to actually leak around the sides, which actually enhances your ability to get infected,” Osterholm told NBC anchor Chuck Todd on “Meet the Press” Sunday. ...

This is the reason why, a year ago, US and WHO public health people advised against healthy people wearing masks. Not putting them on correctly, not wearing them correctly, and not removing them correctly compromises their effectiveness and may actually cause an exposure.

If you’re getting confused, you’re not alone, because a mere five days after saying that double-masking was “common sense,” Fauci seemed to walk back that statement.

“There are many people who feel, you know if you really wanna have an extra little bit of protection ‘maybe I should put two masks on.’ There’s nothing wrong with that, but there’s no data that indicates that that is going to make a difference. and that’s the reason why the CDC has not changed their recommendations.”
