Trump’s Support Is More About Policies Than Personality

Anti-Trump conservatives think they are poised to take back the GOP. They are sorely mistaken.

Anti-Trump “conservatives” such as the Lincoln Project, former Rep. Justin Amash, and more recently Rep. Liz Cheney all have something in common. They almost always attack the president’s tone or personal actions and almost never his administration’s actions and policies. This isn’t an accident. It is because in many cases they do not share Trump’s policy preferences, but those policies are far more popular with voters than theirs are.

On issues such as global trade, aggressive opposition to China, ending foreign wars, growing American manufacturing, securing the border, and using government to fight the culture wars, Trump has transformed the Republican Party. Trump is not a Chamber of Commerce Republican; in fact, the Chamber denounced him this week and threatened donations to pro-Trump Republicans. Like most things, this decision was all about money and power, not about any dedication to democracy.

The hope for this small but very influential group of Republicans and former Republicans over the last four years has been that if conservative voters come to dislike Trump, they will also stop liking his policies. In fact, many are blunt about the fact that they think most of his voters are too stupid to even know what his policies are. That is wrong, and it’s why their past efforts to wrest back Republican voters have failed and why this one will too.

Our critics will never understand nor will they accept this fact.

Because Trump is literally the only one fighting for those policies,  that's why we can look past whatever "flaws" he may have.  If not Trump, then who?   I don't see anybody stepping up, except when it's convenient for them to do so.

And the reverse is almost as true. Those opinion leaders endlessly selling the line about Trump's flaws in reality dislike his policies.

Try telling this to the gang of usual suspects.
For unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death — if you’re unvaccinated — for themselves, their families, and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm. Sloe Joe Biteme 12/16
I will NOT comply.

This really hits at the heart of the matter: In 2016, the populist Republican candidate won but the Socialist Populist (Bernie Sanders) lost.  It is because the "establishment" (Which is mostly never Trump) GOP is more willing to honorably lose than dishonorably win.

That is the mentality of a loser: the only unfair fight is the one you lose.  Trump plays by the "letter of the law" (because if he had broken the letter of the law, the left would have already removed him from office), but he also goes against "norms": calling Rose O'Donnel a "fat socialist whore" isn't against the rules, but does go against most political norms (ie: it is telling the truth.  Rosie O'Donnel is a fat, socialist whore."

Now that Republicans have had 4 years of being with a winner, like any prom queen looking after her own self interest, she isn't going back to her goody-two-shoes "good guy" boyfriend and is in the back seat of the bad boy's '62 mustang with her top off.

This is true. My support came when he was the only one to accurately summarize my feelings on the BLM riots over the summer.

Flip side: his personality is what lost him the election. Something his accolades have a hard time admitting.
