Back in the late sixties when I attended junior high in Buena Park not more than half a mile from Knott's Berry Farm those of us in the California Cadet Corps had target practice with .22's on the tennis courts, and they were less than thirty yards from Knott Ave one of the main freeway access roads. No cops were called, no one complained to the school and not a single one of us fantasized or plotted to kill anyone.
I work as the director of shooting sports at one of the local Boy Scout Camps. We have been in business for about 50 years. Over 30 Thousand scouts have gone through the Rifle, Archery, and Shotgun programs at our camp. To the best of my knowledge not a single one has become a Murderer, Family annihilator, or engaged in a school shooting. What they have done is learned how to safely use firearms and gained respect for them.
